Photo History #2: DEVELOPMENT

1957 Aerial Photo of Portmore

This is the first known aerial photograph of Portmore. This was taken above Kingston near six (6) miles by Tyndale-Biscoe. It shows the mining at Henderson Hills which is reputed to have started from the days when Port Royal was being built. Most of the land was cultivated in either cane or banana. Near the coast, there were wet-lands or dry low secondary forests.

1980s Aerial Photo of Portmore

Contrast the first picture above with this one below from the 1980s. Caymanas Park was built in the late 1950s, but the lands west of Newlands Road was still used for agriculture. Up to this point, mainly low, dry, inhospitable property was used. Later on, housing would move into solid farm land and away from the coast.

Causeway Looking into Kingston

Mr. Edward Seaga inspects the new Portmore Causeway in 1970. The Causeway was built to move people easily to Kingston and the industrial belt of Freezone. Another two (2) lanes were later added to this road as Portmroe developed even more.
