Construction of Independence City
Independence City is the first scheme to be built in Portmore in the late 1960s. It apparently was built on the "Portmore Pen" property and hence got the name "PORTMORE." The name came to be associated with all the developments in this section of the Great Salt Pond district of St. Catherine. In fact, Hellshire was a whole other development as a planned city.

Edgewater Lots for Sale
Edgewater was the second scheme built and it was from this stage that the idea that Portmore was in danger of being "washed away" began.
