Independence City is the the first Scheme to be built in Portmore in the late 60s.
It apparently was built on the "Portmore" property, and so got the name 'Portmore'.
The name came to be associated with all development on this sectin of The Great Salt Pond District of St. Catherine.
In fact, Hellshire was a whole other development as a planned city.

 

Edgewater was the second scheme and it was from here
that the idea the Portmore was in danger of 'washing away' began.
