ABOUT US
The first version of this website was launched on the 1st August 1998 by Kennedy Reid and was called Portmore.org. It has since expanded to this current edition called Portmore.info.
The purpose of Portmore.info is to act as the premier information hub for the municipality of Portmore in the parish of St. Catherine, Jamaica. The municipality of Portmore is located on the south-eastern coast of the island of Jamaica in the Caribbean.
You are free to browse the rest of this portal for further details and information about Portmore. Additionally, Kennedy Reid (a civic leader and 15-year resident of Portmore) invites you to look at his extensive illustrated book about Portmore called "The Story of Portmore."

ABOUT THE MUNICIPALITY
Modern Portmore was started over 50 years ago mainly as an additional residence for the enlarging populations of Kingston and Spanish Town (which are cities adjacent to Portmore in the parishes of Kingston and St. Catherine respectively). The population grew rapidly, so much so that by 2001 when the last Population and Housing Census was conducted, it's population had ballooned to 156,469. By 2003, it became clear that such a large population required a different sort of structure for governance.
Portmore was then granted municipality status in 2003, which denotes a local Government system somewhere between a parish and a city. It presently has a directly elected Mayor in management of the Portmore Municipal Council (PMC) with eleven (11) Councillors in charge of the main sub-divisions in the area. Additionally Portmore is represented through central Government with three (3) Members of Parliament (MPs).
Presently the municipality has 184,548 residents living in 82 communities (data provided by the Portmore branch of the Social Development Commission {SDC} 2004 survey). This proves that the municipality is rapidly changing from the "dormitory community" it was initially established as, to a more developed area. Apart from the increase in housing units there has also been a marked growth of commercial complexes.
