SOS follow-up ############################################################ INTRODUCTION: In a previous publication of this newsletter a mother of four kids asked for help from readers. One kind lady in the USA responded in a practical way. I thank her for her help and encourage others to remember that it is more blessed to give than to get gifts this Christmas. From: SOS (The mother of four) Date: Nov 2003 Dear Sir, How are you, i still wish to remain anonymous, I read your last newsletter, and saw some of the comments, you see what i mean when i say people can be judgmental, I am happy for the way you replied, and am so glad you understand. I just need to tell you that my son who is 19 is seeking a job and is hoping that one day he will be able to go to College, without a college degree one is never able to get a well paid job in this country. There are times in our lives when the sea gets rough and that is the time in my life now, I have no intention of making it permanent, that is why i sought the help. I want so much to thank you again for your kind understanding, and even if I get no help it feels good to know you did not judge me by the amount of kids I have. I will keep you up-to-date and may God bless you. Keep up the good work. Bye for now [SOS] Date: Sat, 15 Nov 2003 12:46:35 -0800 (PST) From: SOS To: kennedyreid@yahoo.com Dear Mr. Reid, Goodday to you,I write to let you know that [MAMA] said she is able to send only US$60, i am very grateful for that but i still need help to get the rest. I was thinking to ask you please if you could get some buyers for some of the things in the house, the situation i am in is not permanent, it's just that i have been on the street before and i dread it happening again, i had lost my job and the landlord took me to court and they put me out, i was living in Independence City at the time. Could you please send me back the last newsletter, the one about the gays are coming. I still wish to remain anonymous. Please write soon. Thank you [SOS] From: (Lady from the USA who helped) Date: Thu, 13 Nov 2003 19:47:06 EST Subject: Re: Thank friend Well, do you know of someone that can help me distribute some of the things I can gather to help families that need them? I understand that this womyn has a job. That alone is more than some have. She does have a 19 year old and that is more than the age myself, my partner and my children began working. I do agree with other people that responded that he needs to be helping the family. If you know of people that are deserving of clothing and other household items I would love to begin setting something up to get them to Jamaica.... ::::::::::::::::: Webmaster's Reply ::::::::::::::::: Is there anyone reading this newsletter who wants to act as an agent in Jamaica? If you wish to help, please call... 320-REID Now I will refuse anyone who wants a reward for this work! Otherwise, please call. ############################################################ 5. Caan Wuk! - Robert Roache ############################################################ INTRODUCTION: The writer below had asked about my ambitions for this newsletter and for specific statistics about the newsletter. Subject: RE: Caan Wuk! From: "Robert Roache" Date: Fri, November 14, 2003 12:37 pm Mr Kennedy Reid, What Up... I have read your response to " Wha Yu a Du" three times and I find it Woo Fully Inadequate. Mr. Kenny Reid before I go any further I must hasten to say I have the highest regard for you for the following reasons a. You Father Your Children and a I get a sense, from your articles, that there is a reasonable level of happyness present in your household. b. Your response to some issues advocates some Christian/Spiritual Allegiance c. I have been previleged to grace your final Joint Council Meeting in the capacity of President. Which you have demonstrated the craft and workmanship of a true leader. d. You had some recent politial asperation which you had hoped to be successful. On these 4 pillars I set my expectation of you above many others and I will tell you why. The obligation of family life is of such that if you have a reasonable happy family it means you have the skills to make a community and country reasonable happy (although the word reasonable is relative). In all instances a father have to learn how to keep a family happy with the available resources. This too is fundamental for the growth of community and country. Hence, the family is an important building block/training ground for Great leaders. A Christian Spiritual foundation dictates "You Can Do All thing Through Christ" and "You Can Do Nothing Without Christ".Also, "You Pray Without Ceasing" and "Christ grace is sufficient for you". Kennedy it is there fore expected that if you are not a practicing Christian you should become one. So that like Jesus anything you put your hands on should continu to grow bear fruit. You have demonstrated some aspect of leadership from the meeting I have seen you chaired which suggest that any other skills needed will/can be learnt. An asperation for political leadership surely to me indicates that you have todate met and satisfied the on going demands of family and community and ready for the demands at the level of a country/state/city. Kennedy Reid Now That I have said that,.. let continue by saying Jesus never begs or beseech,(instead he would ask you to dust off your sandals and move to someone else) he has never used a term to suggest " mi deh pan mi own". He also has never said " I have no long-term plans but to keep on going and see what happens" You indicated that long ago you gave up on making any money from this INTERNET effort I feel you have taken up the best reason when you indicated you did it for "mere pleasure". Things people do for pleasure often time "When Done Well" translate to millions. Jesus did his work well so he is today the Best Leader Known To Man as he did not try to do it himself.. yes he got help from his father. You said also "mi jus extra and nuff" and I say That is exactly what a Jamaican Leader and Child of God should be "Extra Nice To Others And Nuff Love For Christ" My observation of most people at my job, work, sport and church are that persons want the highest positions, the biggest jobs without the hard work. Kennedy if you do the ordinary things well it will produce extordinary results. You have at your fingertips the ordinary internet access with over 600 address that span Jamaica and the world. This access combined with your tallents could increase exponentially nationally and intenationally. Remember, this was not just given to you , it was bestowed on you from a greater source. It is for you to produce the extra ordinary results. Kennedy Reid I expect much more from you for I believe to whom great talents are given great things are expected so check your self cause "Wha yu a du Caan Wuk!!. ::::::::::::::::: Webmaster's Reply ::::::::::::::::: Robert, Thanks for making mi head swell, but I'm still trying to understand what you want of me? My promotions managers, Janette, has tried her best to get sales but people only promise.... so there is no REAL demand for Internet business. If money is to be made from the Internet, I would have to sell pictures of naked women and I'm not sure wifey would approve. Seriously, I would have to find something to sell like, like, like... mi nuh know what! Do you have an idea? I have no idea where my efforts are going. For me the newsletter is already achieving its purpose. However if you have a suggestion I will take it. Where do you think it can go? ############################################################ 6. Response to "wha yu a do?" - Althea Nosworthy ############################################################ From: "Althea Nosworthy" Subject: Re: Portmore Website Newsletter 16 for 2003 Date: Mon, 17 Nov 2003 13:53:08 -0500 Hi Mr. Reid: In your last newsletter, a reader asked "wha yu a do?" We are a lesbian couple - EP ############################################################ From: [Address and name deleted] Date: Sat, 15 Nov 2003 05:26:42 EST Subject: Good Boy, Bad Movie....... Dear Mr. Reid: I respect you and your valiant efforts to better Jamaica. I respect you as a father and responsible husband but I have to say you might want to open your mind just a little. As a child of seven in a family with a full time stay at home mother and a father that provided well for his family and love was prevalent in all of the house. We went to church as a family every week. We were raised good catholic children and taught values from the start of our lives. We had very limited access to TV and "Hollywood." I am in a monogamous ten year relationship. (The relationship I have been in has lasted longer than 5 of my 6 siblings relationships.) I find our very normal life including 3 wonderful girls quite satisfying. I am a good person in both heart and soul. I am generous even though I am not wealthy. I am kind at all turns and dishonesty is not tolerated in our home. Our children are ages 20, 16 and 11. The oldest being successful and quite independent. Having had a home of her own with no help from us since she was 17 years old. She is not pregnant and is planning a family later in life quite responsibly despite being in a relationship with her boy friend for over 2 monogamous years. She is paying for her own education, holding down a full time job and has a nice little car too. Our 16 year old being a typical 16 year old is challenging but in no way a bad person. She is a full time student and holds a job in the evening all while keeping good grades and contributing to the family. The 11 year old is an A-B honor roll student and an extremely well behaved child. We pay our bills on time and in full. We work hard and don't go out at all. Our idea of a good time is a few friends and family over for dinner. We are so "normal" we are boring.... We are a lesbian couple in a ten year relationship. We are not "in pain" and we are not suffering in any way. The painful truth you will find from a gay man in Jamaica is caused by people with feelings such as yours. These feelings of intolerance for anything other than what you are or what you believe is what causes the pain and suffering. Wake up and smell the 21st century. Not every thing that is different is necessarily bad. These American movies are primarily marketed for American youth. No, they are not trying to teach anyone that anything is normal. They are not trying to teach children at all. They are trying to make their pockets full and the big fat white man behind the big mahogany desk in Hollywood thanks you for the $350.00. I know you do not look for the movies to teach your children. They are for entertainment only. The values you teach your child at home over rides anything they will learn form out side sources. Your kids did not even notice the gay couple did they? It was not even an issue for them. You and your adult mind saw it but in a child's mind it was not important. Normal? what is normal? Not to very many years ago it was completely normal for a person of color to be discriminated against in all walks of life. For a person of color to be treated as subhuman was quite NORMAL. It was considered NORMAL for a white person to yell out something quite racist on the street at a couple of black people walking down the road, let alone letting their children go to the same school as those "Ni**ers." Not to many years ago for a Catholic womyn to marry a Lutheran man called for an outcry from the churches and they were shunned because it was not NORMAL. Thank goodness that changed or I would not be here. My parents were of mixed religions. And I beg to differ with you. I am in love with the womyn who has helped me raise the children that have been abandon by their fathers because of her integrity and strength not the shape of her "plumbing." Damn shame a womyn has to take up the slack left behind by fathers that can't see the gift they have been given by having these wonderful kids but damn glad she did. My children are all the better for it. Taught to love not hate. Good boy the movie flopped here in the US and it was not because it had a gay couple in it that's for sure..... The movie stunk all the way around, kinda like a closed mind..... Faithful reader & former resident of JA, [name deleted] ::::::::::::::::: Webmaster's Reply ::::::::::::::::: Dear EP Thanks for your letter and the picture of your happy family. Well I have a friend who says that if he catches any gay person he would push a hot rod up his a** and up through his mouth! He hates gays. On the other hand I have another friend who writes confessing to me that he is gay and is crying because he can't find his way to Christ. Now do allow me get a little religious here... I believe that in the final analysis it will be what God says is right that should be followed. Yes, once certain things were not considered "normal". However, racial prejudice is a 'sin' in the Bible just as homosexual ACTS. The rule of thumb is that if an act takes you away from God, it is wrong... for example gambling and abortion are not listed as wrong in the Bible, but they are sin because they draw us away from our father in Heaven! (So, Kevin, please give mi back di hundred dollars yuh win from mi di other day!:-) Now, I know a number of fellow Jamaicans will read this newsletter and agree with my Biblical stance, but they forget that 80% of Jamaicans are born out of God's will... by means of fornication! Like homosexual acts sex out of marriage is ANOTHER sin that God condemns. In fact both sexual sins have the same punishment!... DEATH BY PUBLIC STONING! It's a GOOOOOD thing Christians have Jesus to rescue them from the law of death! He has clarified and embodied the desires of God's ... A RELATIONSHIP OF LOVE. As I understand it, Jesus wants ALL sinners to come to him and find rest... from the curse of sin and the law. So my friend does NOT have to make himself "straight" before becoming to Christ. He just has to be perfectly submitted to God and allow God to lovingly guide him. God loves to help the weak and avoids the (self)righteous! Therefore pushing hot rods up someone's a** is not of God, but of the devil. (Those persons following the Old testament laws need to be consistent and kill a few fornicators!) As Christians we LOVE people, but HATE their wrong actions! Homosexual acts continue to be wrong and should NOT be promoted as "normal". Movies entertain, but they are also teaching values. Does this make sense? Can you respect my religious view? Or should I be burnt at the stake for being closed minded? Hmmmm. ############################################################ 9. Comments - whycke-andre spence ############################################################ Subject: Keep going Kennedy From: whycke-andre spence Date: Fri, November 14, 2003 8:58 am To: rhouse@cybervale.com Greetings to all the West Cumberland residents on this list. Big effort, this news letter helps to keep our 'Jamaican roots' watered with information keep it up. The vision has waned a bit but just as Robert asks many questions I guess he might be intrested in funding an expansion and promotion program. Now that most schemes have telephones the 'Internet set' must have grown some. Money will come if the investors are convinced that people will see and respond to their adverts. Is okay if the energy wanes a bit keep the tree watered the growth spurt will come soon look at Pastor blair church in bayside I remember when it was a one room thing near the foot of the hill. Mind you his ministry has STRONG helping - interpret as you will but keep the portal open. The idea that the mother should encourage the older youth to get training through HEART is a good choice. How about part time work -for the older youth while getting training? Many supermarkets/gas stations/ warehouses/restaurants in Portmore one must need some unskilled labour for a number of hours each week. sorry not able to give the CONCRETE at this point. A morgue in the town centre sounds unattractive. However some very popular and traditional morgues have sat in the centre of Kingston and other major Jamaican towns for years with no negative effects. At least when you are bereaved you will not need to go to an inaccessible spot to do the necessary processing - incurring additional hardship. Strong comments on the GAY marketing being done by Hollywood. Need a coalition of Parents to keep hammering the point until things get changed. Take encouragement from Jamaicans for Justice and how far they have come with the Breaton shootings just by refusing to keep quiet. Best to start with the Jamaican body responsible forage rating on films and have them adjust the rating categories being used. Small steps gets the journey completed Keep up the good work and be careful of the editorial typing errors - pot calling kettle .... . ::::::::::::::::: Webmaster's Reply ::::::::::::::::: You touch on so many issues that I will post quick comments... No, the Newsletter's vision has never waned... just the time to execute it. Yes, the idea of work for the oldest son is good, the only challenge is to find a low skill job that compensates his efforts! As a politician I have the difficult task of working with the unemployed... it nuh pretty out dey! My message to the national leaders (political and business) is that they need to turn the economy around or hold it steady. Yup, a morgue in the center of town doesn't sound too nice. The problem is that the man has a right to it. If I were the neighbours I would make him an offer he can't refuse...MONEY! But if you can't beat him, then join him by ensuring that the facade of his business looks VERY good and by putting a positive spin on the whole matter! ...in every problem there is an opportunity for a positive outcome! [did i say that?...wow]. You need to know that it is NOT Jamaicans for Justice that worked on the Braeton case. It was Families Against State Terrorism (FAST) that is lead by Mrs Yvonne McCalla Sobers . I met her in the hospital lobby the other night and she is NOT very happy that the police had to be brought to court, but justice MUST be served. It is in all our interest. Sorry for all the errors you encounter in this newsletter!... the kettle is black, but I hope the water is still sweet. ############################################################ 10. Greater Portmore Joint Council Meeting - Kennedy Reid ############################################################ I quite enjoyed the Greater Portmore Joint Council meeting that was held in the 3 North community on Saturday night. It was held in the open park under some tents... really nice. Leaders from all over Greater Portmore were there and they received a number of reports about various issues. They were told about serious concerns about the Sewage treatment plant overflow into gullies. The residents were happy that the 2E & 2W gullies were cleaned, but the overflow would have the reeds and crocodiles back in then soon. Leaders were scared that the NWC was about to take over management from WIHCON and that NWC is rumoured to have given permission for more schemes to be added to the system. A councillor openly wondered what was happening to the garbage generated by the businesses in the schemes. Where were the doctors throwing their syringes? [ might be the newspapers should go under cover]. He pointed out that fetuses, "female" items, and condoms were being seen in the sewage! I reported to the meeting that we will have to expand (again) the Greater Portmore disaster plan to include the rest of Portmore... even though we were under-resourced to meet this challenge. We are going to ask the rest of Portmore to add their resources to ours to have a Municipality wide plan. (since they are making such a fuss about our little plan.). A conference would be planned for early next year. (I will have to re-write the Disaster Plan). <<<< Friday Night >>>>>>> Just got a call from a Greater Portmore resident.... Residents are upset about another big dance being put on at the Greater Portmore Sports Complex... you know the one we are trying to build. This dance is unauthorized and things have gotten out of hand since Multicare Foundation placed the football field in the complex without walls to "protect" it. There have been unauthorized football matches and unauthorized dances. Years ago I advised Multicare that we would not be able to control the Complex if a wall was not built there... they ignored me and went ahead and invested over 3 million there. Well, so said, so done! The residents tells me they are going to call the police... I hope they can get help to stem the noise... (often called music in Jamaica). I will keep you informed. <<<<<<< >>>>>>>>>> ############################################################ 11. Jamaican Politics - Kennedy Reid ############################################################ If you hate Jamaican politics, SKIP THIS ARTICLE! Plus, I am about to put my foot in my mouth and you may not want to see it! Anyway, I have been watching the political scene and I want to comment. My position on the wind of change coming is that both Mr. Patterson and Mr. Seaga should consider going soon. Both men have contributed much to Jamaica, but it's time to pass the baton. On the matter of money in politics... I honestly have not encountered it. I was genuinely shocked that under 5 million dollars was spent on a recent internal party election in the JLP! I can not imagine what for. I can not help but wonder if it also cost this much in the PNP? Wow! All this makes me feel shame to disclose how "much" I spent on my election bid! In fact, my election resources came from only 5 sources. I was one of those sources and another was a JLP supporter who liked me!... nuh laugh! Most donars did not want to be known publicly as supporting a politician, even though they really wanted to help. So, can you imagine if politicians had to disclose their sources, then I would have had no support... an mi caaan tief! Many other persons supported my election campaign in a non-monetary way. Thank God for them, but too many came with their hands stretched for "something". I know that the same is true for politicians of all complexions. The point I am making is... Let us be careful how we adopt American campaign laws! All that happens in the USA is that the money comes another route. What we should ensure in Jamaica is that public money is not used in political campaigns. Ensure there is one man to one vote and money will have no guarantees! The country NEEDS a growing economy and a united and honest government. Whichever party is able to unite the people to deliver on these items is in a good position be the government of the future. I encourage everyone to get involved in the politics of the country. And truthfully, though I am partial towards my party, I don't really care very much what political party you support as long as you are honest and your ideas mek sense! Enough politics! Here's to a better tomorrow! PS. I promise to chat less in the next newsletter... if you all write me!
