From the Editor's Desk - Kennedy Reid ############################################################ Hi guys, The most common notation on my High School report card was that "he just can not spell"! Therefore, its ironic that I should be here attempting to "publish" a newsletter? So sorry for the "goofs" ... just slip pass me! Talking of High School, where are you going to send your kids to High School in Portmore? I have 3 kids and I am at a complete loss for a Great School! Is there any school of high quality in Portmore where parents are pushing down the doors to get there children into? I know about Naggo Head Primary, but which High School? One man says, I should lie and say I live in Kingston so that the kids can get into a traditional High School with its prestige, traditions, and resources. But as a Christian telling a lie is not an option ... what would I tell my kids in Sunday School! The richer Jamaicans don't mind the policy of keeping poorer Jamaican Kids in THEIR own poor community schools. They simply fund the schools in their communities!! On another matter.. What is this matter of us having to wait until 65 to collect the pension money WE saved!!! It's my money an mi want it when dem redundant mi! Do we care what is done in Developed countries when the authorities have not demonstrated the trustworthiness that would allow them to keep wi money! To borrow a Pantomime phrase... a fi wi money and wi want fi use e, len e, spen e as wi want. [Iy is our money and We want to use it, lend it, spend it as WE desire!] Tek uhnu eye afa wi money! Now about the newsletter.. I will be publishing EDITIONS of the same newsletter. So do not get upset when you get another copy of this same newsletter. The second edition will contain "corrections" and catch our new readers. Also, there are now advertisements in the newsletter. Its just a way to recover the thousands I spend each month on this INTERNET thing! Anyway, the first ads in this newsletter are free to my friend PAT as she has started a Flowers business in Portmore and I think its a Great idea worthy of support. Try it. Finally, please remind EVERYONE that it is easy to get registered to receive this newsletter. Just tell them to visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/portmore_newsletter/ Enjoy this publication! ############################################################ ADVT. ############################################################ **************************************************** ***AdVT.******************************************** *** *** *** THE JADE VINE *** *** *** *** 'We try to exceed your expectations.' *** *** *** *** *** *** For Floral Arrangements, Gift Baskets, *** *** Potted Plants, Gardening Services *** *** Landscaping and more... *** *** *** *** Call (876) 939-1656, (876) 704-9723 or *** *** visit Shop 5 Jon Lex Mor Plaza *** *** Independence City. PORTMORE MUNICIPALITY - V. Campbell ############################################################ To: webmaster@portmore.org Subject: PORTMORE MUNICIPALITY Date: Mon, 19 Jan 2004 16:26:39 -0500 Dear Mr. Reid: I would like to use this medium to urge the Mayor or Portmore and his Staff to get on with the job we elected him to do. I have been living in Portmore (GarveyMeade) from 1979 and I am tired of the condition of the roads and lack of sidewalks, particularly out at Edgewater. Those of us who take the bus have to walk on rock stone and "mash up" our shoes heel to get to and from the bus stop and when it rains there are puddles of water everywhere. It is time we get side walks. There are a whole lot of unskilled youths, smoking ganja all over the neighbourhoods. Give them some work to beautify the place. And we (residents of GarveyMeade) notice some shacks going up near the GarveyMeade community. We would like some "alternate housing solutions" found for these shack dwellers before that area start looking like the causeway. Thank you. V. Campbell :::::::::::::::::::: Webmaster's Comment :::::::::::::::::::: Friend, As you know, problems that take years to create can not be solved over night. The Municipality has started and with an able "daddy" in the person of Mayor Lee; also there are well intentioned Councillors (PNP and JLP) to "mother" the city into what we all desire. Give them some time. In the mean time, residents need to get involved by going to the Municipal Council meetings and seeing what the politicians are up to. Talk to them after the meetings about YOUR priorities. I notice the shacks you mention with the same apprehension. The people are starting to take over that open area West of your community. This land is part of the original 'Portmore' Lands. The map of 1814-20 show this land as a Portmore Banana Estate. The people are now finding use for the idle and unclaimed lands in our community... displacing beauty and order. First Port Henderson, then Caymanas Estate land, and now Portmore Estate land. Yes, we need to pity the poor, but we also need to save our community and environment. Kennedy ############################################################ 3. Control the noise - whycke-andre spence ############################################################ Date: Thu, 15 Jan 2004 21:57:08 -0800 (PST) From: "whycke-andre spence" Subject: Noise Hail Mr. Reid, It is good to see that you have responded to the need to bring your news letter in line with the rules of an organization that could assist with your proper distribution and growth. You started 'small' - did it the best way you knew how, then in response to changing tides got in line with the 'rules'. Congratulations I say this as a lead in to the debate on night noise and the claim that 'man mus eat a food' offered (not in same words but sentiment) by ODA last letter. The fact is there are ways that people can be employed and entertained without others being disturbed. In Atlanta and other major cities around the world large concerts are held regularly in venues that are located and designed to ensure that the patrons get maximum benefits while the surrounding community is not disturbed. I am sure a look at the laws in these areas show that the promoters face stiff fines for breaches of the guidelines. I live in London near a major football stadium, on match days we have traffic and pedestrian congestion for two hours before and after the game as the police move the fans in an orderly fashion in and out of the venue. Inside the stadium it is deafening but very little of the noise gets out. Major concerts are also hosted there yet no noise escapes - two miles of disturbance offered by Sting is rubbish and should not be accepted.professional sound settings can give patrons the noise levels they want with out it all escaping. To be fair I must ask what the experience was like for the Youth for Christ Genesis event? It could be due to the fact that the voter in other places is aware of his power and the 'voted for' are aware that spine less leadership can lead them out of a job. Those in positions of authority need to make the unpopular decisions or leave the job to those who will set and maintain standards. Just because you are a 'sufferer' does not mean that your way of making a living has to disturb others. A job for the municipality is to move through Portmore and ensure that breaches of night noise are warned then shut down for non compliance, also that persons who are in breach of the covenant of their 'homes' through the operation of shops, garages, etc be put through due process and made to discontinue. Portmore has for too long sprawled without control .... time enough. King street and Constant spring road were eventually cleared of vendors - some of them even have stores now. Peace and continued growth. I am Whycke-Andre Spence His strength is made perfect in my weakness! Whycke-andre :::::::::::::::::::: Webmaster's Comment :::::::::::::::::::: I could not agree with you more! The site has over 400 photographs covering 5 years and 4 West is certainly in here. I must admit that there are not recent pictures. Since I am in 4 West almost every week working on the Sports Complex or the Disaster Management Center, one of these days a picture is sure to turn up.
