Portmore Population - Nadia Lindo ############################################################ From: "Nadia Lindo" To: webmaster@portmore.org, kennedyreid@yahoo.com Subject: Population Date: Tue, 24 Feb 2004 Hi, Good day. My daughter is doing a project on demographics of any city outside of her birth country. I was thrilled when she chose my birth city - PORTMORE. I was even more excited to see that we (Portmorians) have our own website. I'm impressed. What we could not find on the site was the demographics for the cities within Portmore. The cities that I need census stats are: Portsmouth Waterford Westchester Cumberland Garveymeade/Westmeade Bridgeport Edgewater Greater Portmore Gregory Park Independence City Passage Fort Braeton Hellshire I am sure that there are others that I cant seem to remember. Can you please help us with our quest? Please send all information to lindophd@hotmail.com Thank you in advance. Regards, NL ***AdVT.******************************************** *** *** *** Lees Fifth Avenue *** *** *** *** 'Visit us online at' *** *** http://www.leesfifthavenue.com/ *** *** *** *** *** ********************************************ADVT.*** -------------- [] RESPONSE [] -------------- Nadia Lindo, Sorry for taking so long to reply... Portmore's population is about 170,000 persons in the last Census. Of that, about 54-60 thousand live in Greater Portmore proper, 5000 in Independence City, 3000 in Edgewater, 2-3 thousand in Portmore Pines, 16,000 in Waterford, 2-3 thousand Hellshire. These are rough estimates based on 4 persons per household in the communities. ############################################################ 2. Dim street lights in Portmore - Doreen Samuels ############################################################ From: "Samuels, Doreen" To: "'webmaster@portmore.org' Subject: Dim street lights in Portmore Date: Mon, 19 Jan 2004 14:23:35 -0500 Hi Kennedy, It has been my recent observation that the street lights in Portmore are extremely dim and the streets are poorly lit. Too many areas in Portmore are without adequate street lights. Consequently, I find that I, like many other drivers, am forced to drive with my bright lights on, which can be hazardous to other drivers. I hope that you can use this medium, as well as any others available to you, to highlight this problem to the Mayor of Portmore. I know that the municipality is in its infant stage, and therefore adequate funding might not be available now, however, I do not wish to have these dim roads become "black spots". An urgent maintenance programme needs to be implemented, and brighter bulbs should replace those currently in use. For the safety of ALL road users, I sincerely hope that this issue will be dealt with expeditiously. ***AdVT.******************************************** *** *** *** RBTT BANK JAMAICA *** *** *** *** We are coming to Portmore *** *** http://www.rbtt.com/ *** *** *** *** *** ********************************************ADVT.*** -------------- [] RESPONSE [] -------------- Doreen, I have not really noticed the dimness, but I note that there was a general repair program the other day. That reminds me, the light in front of my home is out! I did call JPS but.... well it's still out. I need to call again and get the NAME of the agent who did promise to have it looked after. I should be seeing the Mayor this weekend at a PNP meeting in Greater Portmore North. I will raise the issue (by-di-way... if you are a PNP member or interested citizen in the community, there will be a meeting this Sunday in Ascot High. You are invited.) Another way to get the matter attended is to come to the Municipal Council meetings. There you will see PNP and JLP Councillors who can raise the matter in Council. Also, sometimes the Council has "guest" from the utilities that can help. Oh, one last thing.... dim those bright lights!!! You could be charged AND arrested for Dangerous Driving. ############################################################ 3. Education Roundtable Forum - Portmore ############################################################ Subject: Education Roundtable Forum Date: Wed, 11 Feb 2004 15:25:19 +0000 OFFICE OF THE MINISTER MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, YOUTH & CULTURE 2 National Heroes Circle P.O. Box 498 Kingston 4 Jamaica W. I. 2004 February 10 Mr. Kennedy Reid C/o Portmore Joint Citizens Association Portmore St. Catherine My Fellow Jamaican: The Honourable Prime Minister has publicly directed that a review of the education system be done. This review is to indicate the extent to which the education system is preparing students to take their place in a competitive local and international environment and comes in the wake of vigorous public discussion of the merits and de-merits of our system, and its strengths and weaknesses. As Minister of Education, I have established a Strategic Transformation Team, which has already begun its work. This is the beginning of the process to engage our stakeholders in creating the vision for Education, clearly articulating the outcomes necessary and the role that we ALL must play to position education as the key driver for growth and productivity. To this end, there will be a series of “Regional Roundtables” at which key stakeholders will be asked to be involved in a participatory process. Growth Facilitators, with principals Marguerite Orane and Robert Wynter, will facilitate this. You are being invited to attend the Roundtable for Region 6 (of which you are a part), on February 12, 2004, at the Portmore HEART Academy Auditorium, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Kindly direct your response to Mrs. Sharon Wolfe at 968-2081/824-0916 or sgwolfe@hotmail.com. I know you have much to contribute to creating a first-rate, world-class system and hence, anticipate your presence. Yours sincerely, Maxine Henry-Wilson Hon. Maxine Henry-Wilson, M. P. Minister /per -------------- [] RESPONSE [] -------------- I publish this article for public interest only. I was unable to attend the Forum. Just a note, I am a part of the Greater Portmore Joint Council not the Portmore Joint Citizens Association. ############################################################ From the Editor ############################################################ Everyone ---- MY MAIL BOX IS EMPTY!!!! What is happening? Is there no news from Portmore? I suppose we are all busy in the long traffic lines from Portmore morning and evening! I am so upset that Highway2000 did not START in Portmore! Anyway, it is finally on the way by the Causeway. There are other houses coming to Portmore area! Top class town houses are to be built going all the way north of Greater Portmore. I am greatly concerned that these persons will be attached to the defective Greater Portmore sewage plant! What a shame that between WIHCON and NWC the plant is no longer the model it was three years ago! Between this matter and the soot the citizens of Greater Portmore will have to be vigilant and militant! Good news... Jobs! The new schemes, highway, Banks, Shopping centers and IT entities coming to Portmore should mean that jobs should be around. The e-Services Company Ltd. is occupying that new building at Naggo Head and will provide 500 jobs. Apply now! They want customer service persons to answer calls from around the world. The government plans to build two more such buildings. Finally, may I comment on foreign affairs.... skip this section if you hate politics. While we focus on Terrorism, the world is facing a bigger problem... the world climate is changing for the worst! President Bush made a poor choice by pulling out of agreements to reduce global warming. If Carricom can not even send troops to defend the elected president of Haiti, what does that say of Caribbean integration? What happens in the USA has a very BIG impact on Jamaica! It pains my heart to say it, but it seems like the Republicans are leaving the White House this November! I'm no Democrat ( as their support for the murder of babies, gay marriages, etc, really turns me off), but Mr. Bush has made too many poor decisions that cost thousands of lives around the World (notice that Americans only count their loss!! The rest of us in Asia and the middle east don't count and are forgotten). Of course, he has faced some very VERY difficult problems... economic depression and terror, but we need a less "frantic" America. We need a leader of world peace. The Bush administration has done its mission to restore respect for America, but now it's time to move on! Let's see what the American citizens decide (and hopfully not those idiots who didn't understand the voting process in Florida last time, and the US Supreme Court).
