Citizens should then be safer when getting off the buses at nights. In May there will be a major beautification project that same along Braeton Parkway all the way down to 6 West. Residents need to take care of the plants that will be planted. The new Municipal offices are now open to the public. They are upstairs the Portmore Pines Plaza. They accept your complaints and building plans for approval. The first Portmore Municipal Ordinance (law) will soon be passed. It will ban the rearing of farm animals in the City. The Council meets monthly and may be addressed by the public with approval from the Mayor...Write to the Mayor in order to address the Municipal Council on any matter of interest to you. The huge drain that runs above Monza and Daytona will take millions to clean. Consequently, Mayor Lee has applied for “extra” funds from the Equalisation Fund. Let’s support him in this matter. The drain is a source of concern for the residents. The NWC says that the "black stuff" in our water is Manganese. it is a naturally occurring substance and they claim that it not harmful. We still think it is unacceptable and affects the devices which use water... cars, washing machines, meters! The Greater Portmore Sewage plant has fallen into disrepair. It is also invested with crocodiles. The sewage water is backing up into the communities of 2West and 2 East. Citizens are complaining. NEPA says that the extra water and garbage in the waterways will attract larger, more dangerous, Crocodiles. Particularly where water is over 3 feet high. Most Crocs are not very harmful, but should be avoided. The NWC, NEPA, and the Municipality are planning a Community Education Program. The NWC has promised to fix the problems at the sewage plant. Portmore Week will run from April 25 to May 2, 2004. As the date draws near you will be informed in more detail. This year the Sports Spectacular is at Ascot High and there will be a wheel chair road race from South Boro to Ascot High. Also, this year there will be a business and community EXPO at HEART. MP Ftiz Jackson is working on the improvement of the Naggo Head Park. It is to be handed over to the city when completed. In June there will be a Community Forum at the Greater Portmore Civic Center. Dr. Omar Davis will be there to answer our questions. The soot coming from the sugar cane is causing great concern. Mayor George Lee has contacted the Ministry of Health to intervene. The government is thinking of building two more such buildings in the community. Highway2000 has a policy of employing persons from the community in which they operate. They are now in Portmore so person should approach them now. It is understood that the contractors had to employ skilled workers from abroad. New developments taking place in our community represent opportunities for work. For example: * Nova Scotia and RBTT Banks will soon be here. * A new plaza is to open in the Town Center. * It is said that WIHCON plans to build town houses on their complex adjacent to Monza. * New Era Housing Ltd. plans to build about 1,000 housing units on lands just north of Daytona. * A plaza is planned for the land east of the 100 Man Police Station.
