Fisherman Devastated and Frustrated - Mark DeVoney ############################################################ Thu, 23 Sep 2004 07:36:58 From: "Mark DeVoney" Subject: Devastation in Hellshire & request for direct assistance on your webpage To: webmaster@portmore.org Kennedy, I met with the President of the Half Moon Bay Fisherman's Co-Op yesterday (Devon Malcolm). He was frustrated with the lack of assistance from government and asked about the possibility of establishing a web page or other link that potential donors could use to provide donations or other assistance. Coincidently, I had been thinking something similar, but the only idea that came to mind was to see if you would be willing to put something in your e-newsletter and webpage about the devastation in Hellshire and the request for more direct & timely assistance than is currently available through central government. Can you help with this? Mr. Malcolm's phone number could be listed as a contact (876-404-0697) and I can also serve a contact and coordination point via my e-mail or cell phone (876-434-6754). The newspaper's aerial picture you have of Hellshire is a good one, I also have some closer-up before & after pictures, but have not developed the film yet. Not only has Hellshire beach lost many of their homes and sustained severe damage to most other homes and shops, they have also lost their primary source of revenue, since not many folks are coming to the beach. There are many hungry and destitute residents there. I will be out of the office tomorrow (Friday) and back in on Monday. Thanks, Mark ******************* Webmasters Comment ******************* Mark, Real sorry to hear about the needs of the fisherfolk. Yes, I am willing to help and I have published your e-mail so that others can help. I suspect that an appeal to the Fisheries Division of the Ministry would be of some help. I was there when Gilbert hit and it was certainly something to see. My heartfelt sorrow goes out to those who have lost their loved ones and/or homes. Even though some things are material and can be regained, blessed are all of you to still have life, health and your faith. Anyway, I would like to bring one small error to your attention. On the website, your fist tab is 'Histroy', the word has been misspelled, probabaly just a typographical error. I'll be visiting your site as often as I can. Peace, Love and Guidance P.S. Evacuation not taken seriously - George Baker ############################################################ From: "George Baker Date: Mon, 13 Sep 2004 We dont take evacuations seriously. We need to pursue making it legislatively compulsory or else one day Portmore or sections thereof may have damage as serious as Cayman, Caribbean Terrace, Portland Cottage or Alligator Pond. I went to my father in Spanish Town. Hope you and your family are safe dry and well. George Baker ******************* Webmasters Comment ******************* George...The family is very well, thank you. Well the authorities needed to order an evacuation much sooner than they did. I watched as the decision came down too late for the Municipality to enforce it. The rains were on us! There are many difficulties with an forced evacuation: 1) The Human rights of individuals to stay where they wish 2) The legal and moral obligation of the authorities to provide better shelters with food and medicine. 3) The need to have police watch property from robbers 4) The oderly return of residents. Lets continue to talk things out these things.... until there are solutions in place. ############################################################ 4. The Church and Ivan - Sister Ellen Gonter ############################################################ From: "church" To: [long list deleted] Subject: URGENT PRAYERS NEEDED TODAY: THE HURRICANE IS COMING! Date: Thu, 9 Sep 2004 09:33:13 -0500 This is Sister Ellen Gonter at the Jamaica Christian Mission. We are working hard today to prepare for Ivan but our strongest defense is your prayers. Please put us on your prayer chains today and begin praying NOW! The island's emergency services are not fully equipped to handle a storm of this magnitude so it may be weeks or months before the power is restored as well as phones and even water supplies. The water we are collecting today coming from the pipes is already "dirty" and Portmore has had no water since last night. Your prayers are urgently needed and as many as possible for this storm to pass us by and if not for the protection of all life here on the island. Items can be replaced but people can't. I will get word to you as soon as possible after the storm is over but will need for you to pass it on to others as our resources will be greatly hampered for sure. Thank you and we now put it all in God's hands . . . as they say here, PRAY US UP BIG PLEASE! In God's Care, Sister Ellen, the Mission Staff and families ******************* Webmasters Comment ******************* Hello Sister Ellen, How are you now? I am sorry for the late publication of your e-mail but your prayers were answered. On two occasions I heard the Prime Minister call for a Church Service of Thanksgiving to God for sparing Jamaica from the worst of Hurricane Ivan. (On both occasions he was met with luke warm responses.... Interestingly, have you noticed that whenever the church is mentioned in public there are negative comment about the church collection!) In recent times my own pastor has been declaring that Jamaica is ready for "3rd level judgment"... whatever that is.. because of our wicked ways (you know; the murders and sexual immorality, etc.). He stated that the devastation was on the way and all we can do is to cry for mercy. Might be Ivan was that Judgement delayed?? Who knows about these things... What we all should do is attend the the National Service in gratitude. Kennedy ############################################################ 6. Greater Portmore Football - Delroy Spencer ############################################################ From: "Spencer, Delroy" Subject: GPFC Date: Sat, 25 Sep 2004 21:08:21 -0500 The 2004/5 Portmore Football League kicks off on October 17 with the usual dress parade ceremony and two opening games. The last competition was sponsored by WHCON and the dress parade was held at the Greater Portmore Sports Complex where twelve teams paraded. Greater Portmore FC completed its transfer with the signing of one of Arlington's FC goalkeeper, Gifton 'Campos' Smiley. he was loaned to Christian Pen last season but has found favor with the Greater Portmore Football Club. He assisted the coach during the summer U17 program. Campos is very talkative and uses this gift to control his defenders on the field. Campos will be supported by last year's goalkeeper from Harbour View, Rory Osbourne. Rory is twenty-one and was remarkable during Manning Cup for KC. The new coach is FitsMurray Reid who is also the man at Greater Portmore High School. Well, everything looks fine for this new season with the committment of the Sports Complex Management Team, Counsellors, Mayor and the Municipality to support the team. Mayor Lee has verbally promised to assist the team in one way or another. Kennedy Reid met the team Saturday, September 25 at the Sports Complex and as also promised to get all the support for the team. In his speech, he reminded the players of the plans for the Sports Complex and the willingness of his team to work with the Sports Club. He also pledged to assist with the restoration of the utility services at the Complex. The Club will be travelling to the Prison Oval to engage newly promoted team, Arlington FC and returns home the same day for a game against Newlands FC as part of its pre-season games. The new coach will be seeing most of the players in a match situation for the first time and will be using these games before his final 'cutting' of players training for the team. Regards Delroy Spencer General Secretary/Manager Greater Portmore FC. ******************* Webmasters Comment ******************* Can anyone out there help our Football team? I believe it has places to go. ############################################################ 7. I appreciate your site and the highlight it gives to the city of Portmore. I was so happy when I came upon it while surfing the internet. I've lived in Portmore since I was 8 yrs. old. I am now 27 yrs old and reside in the U.S. Before I left, I met and fell in love with a guy who lived in Portmore. His name is Neil Jones and he was a up-n-coming singer. He resided in the Weschester area of Portmore. He did stage shows in the Portmore area on occasions, 1 of which I had attended with him. We lost contact since I came here and I've been frantically searching for him ever since. I hope I can use this as an avenue by which I can locate him. If you or anyone knowing anything about Neil Jones, please feel free to contact me @ my email address, or send an article/comment to the website. Thanx so much and keep up the good work Mr. Reid. I'll make sure to paste the site on my homepage! ******************* Webmasters Comment ******************* Someone please help Shelly-Ann! ############################################################ 8.
