Notes from Portmore Municipal Council Meeting - Kennedy Reid ############################################################ Notes from Portmore Municipal Council Meeting July, 2005 * Waterford citizens are unhappy with the NWC's work in the vicinity. * July 31 there will be a Church Service at Elim Open Bible Naggo Head on Emancipation Day. On the 1st of August there will be an Exhibition. On the 6th of August there will be a flag raising ceremony in the Portmore Pines Plaza * The Council will be in recess next month. * There is need for the police to control the improper habits of the "executive" buses. * There are complaints about the illegal activities of the taxi operators by 6 West * The 100 man Station's roof is top be fixed by the Municipality. * A Crime Prevention and Safety Committee is to be formed based on a successful British Model. The committee will consist of the police, the Councillors, NGOs. * There are some companies that have agreed to help the Municipality with beautification efforts. * On July 21 a Municipal Court will be held in Portmore. Persons in various breaches will be prosecuted... including churches (which are normally untouchable). This court will be at the former Gerater Portmore Police station in 5 West. * The comments by Kingston's Mayor that Portmore was being favoured for political reasons was "regretted" by Mayor Lee... who refused to state anything further than that the money granted was in compensation for past shortfalls and far less than was needed. $50 million is needed for drain cleaning in Portrmore and $16 million was requested. The Council received on $4 million. * The PAC (Portmore Advisory Council) complained that too many committee meetings were being placed in the day when citizen participants are at work. Then, these meetings are often postponed for lack of a quorum (councillors being absent), or start very late. * 99% of barbers and Hairdressers in Portmore are in compliance with registration with the Council. ############################################################ 2. Webmaster's comment ........................ Boy, what a long time it tek fi hear anything in Jamaican courts! And this is a small little country. The Jamaican Justice System needs radical change. This month makes 4 months since a resident of my community has been locked in goal awaiting a trial. The goal stink and are inhumane.... and what if the man is innocent? Look at it, many citizens rot in goal mainly because they are poor and the lawyers in this country profit from an inefficient system. Can you imagine one of the MP's kids staying in goal for 4 months! You would see the system change fast. But no one seems to care. On the matter of the Portmore Case; I understand they wanted Portmore supporters to be in Court. It will be interesting to see if Jamaican courts are the defenders of Goliath or David. But who is right? Breaches & naming I95 - Cynthia Vaughan ############################################################ Date: Mon, 11 Jul 2005 07:10:58 -0700 (PDT) From: "cynthia vaughan" Subject: Re: Portmore E-newsletter : Hurricane Dennis! To: portmore_newsletter-owner@yahoogroups.com Hi Kennedy, I just want to make a few comments. The first is about the building breaches. I had a problem when I bought my house as the garage wall was less than 2 ft or whatever from my neighbour's wall on one side so I had to demolish it and rebuild it, yet on my other side the neighbour has built an apartment on the dividing wall itself. I have complained both by telephone and in writing and the authorities have visited, but nothing has been done about it. In addition my trees were chopped down to accommodate the construction. But guess what, I visited a friend in Mona and her garage wall is on the neighbours but it has been approved because they build something like a tiny concrete wall to lead the water off. I wonder if everyone can do this then? Secondly, the churches in the area can use the green spaces to build basketball and netball courts and put up lights so that persons can use them, instead of building it in the church yard. In my area there is an open land and the church has put up a high fence around the church yard and locked its gate at that end, so if someone is being held up, they can't even run in the yard or get assistance. The next thing is that I think that the Highway in Portmore should be named after one of the long-living families in the area. Two that come to mind are the Gleaner vendor Mr. Williams and Gary Weetom who has been operating a grocery shop since the early seventies or before. Perhaps there are others too. Finally, the Portmore United players should be feted as well as other youth groups that have excelled. We need to motivate them.Congrats to Portmore United! I like the part of their name 'united' . C Vaughan ........................ Webmaster's comment ........................ Come, come now Cynthia, when have you ever heard of a road being named after mere ordinary people? I mean, we need the road to have distinction! It should be named after.... say.... an outstanding politician, or a noted citizen! Indeed, I suggest ' Edward Seaga Blvd' since he was the Development Minister who endorsed a plan to develop "Portmore" for mass housing. OR I would suggest 'Michael Manley' since he was the force behind the Greater Portmore project that gave so many of us poor folk a chance to own a home! Who knows... It will be interesting to see the final name. Might be we should call it "freedom Highway" in honour of the 2,000+ slaves who once worked these lands. Why not call it "Matalon" highway.. or... there are so many people who helped to build Portmore! Kennedy ############################################################ 4. It's quite comprehensive on its coverage of Portmore. I was wondering if u could include information on the Local Authority chaired by Mayor Lee? Information on their role and function, elected councillors, senior administrators and their rates would be greatly appreciated. Best Regards, Andre Wiltshire ........................ Webmaster's reply ........................ The Website is about Portmore and not just the Municipality. Any details you wish needs to come from them... The officers at the Municipal Office have failed to send me any material. The Municipality has even rejected offers to be a part of my site. ....everyone wants their own web presence and I understand that, but to date they are not online. I would love them to be so you and other may have more information. I hope someone from the Municipal office answers this letter.... I left your e-mail address for them to respond to directly. The Overloaded Marl Trucks - Alicia Scott ############################################################ Date: Fri, 8 Jul 2005 18:43:51 -0700 (PDT) From: "Alicia Scott" Subject: Construction of the Highway To: "Kennedy Reid" High Kennedy. I too agree that the overloaded trucks used to transport marl for the highway construction are a nuisance and a hazard! I hope something will be done about them soon but I wont hold my breath waiting. When it rains in Ja the roads suffer enough. Now with these trucks to add to the problem our roads in Portmore have become unbearable. Everywhere I drive I have to sight 'Craters' not potholes- in the road. When will it end? If the powers that be will ensure that the roads are made properly in the first place instead of paying these people to do inferior work that has to be fixed everytime it rains, we will be just fine. Now these marl trucks just add to the problem!! I too look forward to the toll road which i plan to use but as you say, we should have the right to choose and not be forced just like Spanish Town and Old Harbour. God Bless. ........................ Webmaster's reply ........................ Thanks for the comments friend!
