Mama Portia win! ############################################################# ############################################################ Hello everyone, Well, well, well, the Hon. Portia Simpson-Miller won the hearts of the PNP delegates and thereby was elected to become Jamaica's first female Prime Minister! She will be the seventh Prime Minister under the seventh Governor General of Jamaica (counting the acting GGs). If you go on the website you will see pictures of Portia's campaign in Portmore. She was supported locally by Councillors from Greater Portmore East and Waterford, and by our Mayor. Local businessman, Mr. R. White, was also in her corner. Jamaicans want nothing short of a miracle from Portia. They need 'More Jobs' and 'a low crime level' and the new PM has less than 12 months to deliver... or else! She has to overcome the significant level of public discontent, skepticism, and disaffection. A major challenge is that too many of her comrades are unpopular. She will also be challenged by the Hon. Bruce Golding. If he is ever able to endear himself to the Jamaican people then he will be the next Prime Minister in less than 12 months. On the other hand, if she is stern with failing politicians, talks straight and honestly with the people, and if she is seen to be concerned for the poor, then there is no reason why she can not win the next national elections. May God's will be done either way! I was there for most of the PNP's election day... taking pictures as usual. Interestingly, Peter Phillip's camp looked unsure of victory from very early in the morning. As I walked through that camp the people were defensive and did not want to be photographed. Portia's camp was the opposite... they were singing as they got off the buses and posed for photographs. By my estimation Portia was not short of organisation nor means. There was more than enough food and supplies on hand at her TWO camps! There were caps, tents, triage centers, and dining rooms. The Portia supporters were determined to make a point. One woman stated "mi nuh have no doctorate!" and a man said "Wi nuh come fi mashup di rock, but fi show him sey him nuh suh solid!". they joked about having two ambulances for Maxine when "wi win". Her delegates spoke excitedly all day and taunted the opposition. I was also there when the announcement of the winner was made by the Most Honourable P J Patterson. Before it came I recall one fellow becoming so upset saying... "Dem a go tief har again! Mi can't stan it. Mi gone!" and he left before the announcement! Then there was a point when the Peter supports started to celebrate as though they had heard news of a win for their candidate. the Portia supports looked in horror but soon responded with a surge of their own! When the true news was eventually announced the people hugged and danced wildly. I struggled to keep the camera steady praying that no drinks would wet it. All in all it was fun to see some semblance of true democracy in politics!... Portmore in the News ############################################################ ############################################################ Wed Feb 1, 2006 Mosquito plague gets residents upset http://www.radiojamaica.com/news/story.php?category=2&story=22776 Residents of Greater Portmore in St. Catherine are upset with the National Water Commission (NWC). The residents say they are being plagued by mosquitoes because the utility company has not been maintaining the 24 sewage ponds it owns in the area. Speaking with RJR News, People's National Party councillor Councillor Thomas added that the NWC had allocated two million dollars to the Portmore municipal council to clean the ponds but that amount was inadequate. .................... 'I-95' Roadway in Portmore to be Officially Named Municipal Boulevard KINGSTON, (JIS): Thursday, January 26, 2006 The roadway from the Mandela Highway to Braeton Parkway in Portmore, St. Catherine, commonly known as 'I-95', will be officially named the Municipal Boulevard. An unveiling ceremony and the erection of a road sign will take place in early February on site. Mayor of Portmore, George Lee, told JIS News that the name has been gazetted as well as published in the daily newspapers to inform the public. Mayor Lee said that the road, which was a "major thoroughfare," was never named but was called "I-95" by the majority of persons. He noted that because it was not considered a legal name, the Police had difficulty prosecuting drivers who committed traffic offences on it. Additionally, he said the Council would be seeking funds during this year to erect street lights on the road. ........................... Cop jailed for smuggling phone to prisoner http://www.radiojamaica.com/news/story.php?category=2&story=23080 Thu Feb 16, 2006 A policeman who was allegedly caught smuggling a cellular phone to a prisoner at the Hundred Man Police Lock-up in Portmore, St. Catherine is now behind bars. 24 year old constable has been charged. .......................... Mayor Lee Pleased with PM's Promise to Address Portmore's Sewage Problem KINGSTON, (JIS): Thursday, February 02, 2006 The Prime Minister gave his commitment while delivering his address at the official ground breaking ceremony for the US$50.3 million plant in St. Catherine on January 31. The project, adjacent to the Mandela Highway is bordered by the Duhaney, Hunt's Bay and the Rio Cobre Rivers and will facilitate over 600,000 domestic households, industrial and commercial properties. It is expected to be completed in 24 months and will be done in two phases. Phase one will see the construction of new oxidation treatment ponds capable of treating 20 million gallons of wastewater per day. The Soapberry wastewater project involves the rehabilitation of the existing pumping station at Nanse Pen, construction of a 24-inch diameter gravity fed main from Greenwich, construction of a 24-inch force main from Greenwich and from Hunts Bay, and a 30-inch force main from the Nanse Pen Pumping Station terminating at Soapberry. WEBMASTER'S COMMENT ON THE NEWS ............................ Soapberry Penn on which the new sewage plant is to be built is technically in Portmore's borders. It should be noted that it has no significance in our history to date. The road called "I95" was actually names so by the police at the 100 man station as people were said top be speeding on it as on that famous US freeway. With the registration of the name it becomes a public road and subject to all relevant laws... including the speed limit. There are pictures of the unveiling on the site. Cayman and Jamaica - Bishop Fagan ############################################################ ############################################################ http://www.caycompass.com/cgi-bin/CFPnews.cgi?ID=1011112 Mass exodus is prophesied Wednesday 15th February, 2006 Posted: 15:32 CIT (20:32 GMT) As a native born Caymanian, I ask you to give me a chance to speak to my people including all expats...but especially the Jamaican community. I was waiting for the day when I would hear or read in the paper that there was a change in our local daily news. For the last few months all guns, arrows and spears were pointing on Jamaicans as the culprits of every bad influence in Cayman. Very few persons have written or voiced about the many good hard working gardeners, builders, teachers, nurses and those domestic helpers who adjusted themselves to very low living in order to care for our children while we worked and how they did it just to make honest bread. As I said I can’t keep quiet any longer for when good men and women keep silent evil men and women prevail. May I ask the question to my people, saved and unsaved alike, now that the Jamaican population is almost eradicated from Cayman and the door has been open for the gay and lesbian community to visit and take up abode when they are ready....Cayman what’s next’? May I say that when we become so confused and desperate for money and revenue and begin to kill one kind in order to give life to another the Island is heading for big trouble and a downfall. I am presently living in Portmore, Jamaica, and to be honest as a native born Caymanian I am amazed at the type of treatment that the government has given me and my family despite the way many (not all) of my own people has treated Jamaicans. To be honest it is embarrassing at times. And may I say despite the high crime rate, living in Jamaica is not as bad as it seems once you are in the position to live a normal life. I am not here by choice I am now a missionary to Jamaica along with several other Caymanians and it’s a beautiful place to live. I am asking the entire Cayman Islands to record this article: A day is coming when Cayman is going to try and make friends back with Jamaica, but it will be too late because the Lord has opened up other doors for the Jamaican community through CARICOM. Jamaicans can now fly to other Caribbean islands, rent a place and start working right away (no permits). For those of you who still have Jamaicans working for you, treat them good. Nurture the friendships. Treat them good as from today because you can pay them Friday and that’s the last time you might see that helper, worker or church member. Between now and December 2006 there is going to be a mighty exodus of Jamaicans out of Cayman without Immigration pressure. Many of them are hurting while they are cooking, cleaning and building by the harsh words and insults over the air waves. Already we see the impact taking a toll on the private sector, builders, stores, travel agents, private homes and churches. What’s next when our teens and school leavers start migrating to England, USA or Canada because Cayman is too bored with mostly elderly people? Before you reply or call the talk show think positive about all that I’ve written and remember who has written this time; a fellow Caymanian who used to wait for the Jamaican boat to come for my granny to load on rope and trade with Jamaica. This is not politically motivated at all. I am talking to the entire Cayman Islands. Make the changes but do it with pride and dignity not with revenge and arrogance. No man is an Island to himself. I am humbly asking you to stop the nationality bashing on the radio, TV and newspaper. It looks bad. A few months before hurricane Ivan I prophetically preached on Radio Cayman that a type of famine was going to hit Cayman and that people would have money but wouldn’t able to spend it and just as I said it happened. We had money but there was nothing to buy. I love my country and my people and refuse to sit back and not voice what I feel. Right is right and wrong is wrong. Don’t kill one set to give life to another. Your efforts to show case Portmore has captured a global audience. I have one request of you however, and it is that you update your product at least twice a month. Once a fortnight is highly recommended. My reason for suggesting is that I fear you will lose your well earned audience should this not be considered. Maybe you could list all the topics in the contents as links so that if someone (like myself) doesnt want to view all the topics, could just go straight to what they want to see by clicking on the link. Also, there could be another link at the end of each topic that takes you back to the contents, so you could choose another link (topic). This would minimize all the time spent scrolling down and searching in between the pages to read what you want. Thank you. DDear Pat, it is VERY difficult to get information. You should visit their website online. Interestingly, the new bridge to replace the Causeway seems to be a 4 lane road and not the six lanes that was promised... (unless they plan to build another bridge). A four lane road would not help us much as we already have three lanes leaving Portmore in the mornings. I note that the Prime Minister had his "meeting with Portmore". It was a session at Jamaica House with selected leaders. This was a far cry from what was expected... a public session in the community. It appears the PM had no stomach for a confrontation but still wanted to fulfill his promise..... Some people too smart fi dem pants! (laugh) Frankly, Pat, this is why I believe that a Portia lead PNP has the better chance at the next elections... I know she would have attempted some real solution to the challenge. Anyway, it appears the gentle Prime Minister had nothing to offer the Portmorians at the meeting. Suh wi all betta jus settle wi self an pay di toll. Let us pray that the road is ready BEFORE the rainy season and all hell breaks out on the roads again. I look forward to the new road... even with the toll! I invite us all to use this Worldwide Jamaican Petition for the Separation of Powers in the Government of Jamaica as a part of our answers and resolution. Treat the heart of the issues to set Jamaica on the path to recovery. This is a peaceful, non confrontational and the most appropriate approach to problem solving of this nature. It fosters unity and coming together of Jamaicans. It promotes development of Jamaica and her citizens at all levels. It inspires confidence and trust in us as a progressive and forward reaching people, worthy of world class status and acclaim. It requires large numbers of us to do it. With the internet, email and cell phones we have that well covered. We are an amazing people and always will be. With so many of us as examples, on show for the world to enjoy: Marcus Garvey, Bob Marley, Ben Carson, Merlene Ottey, Lisa Hannah, Norman Manley, Alexander Bustamante, Courtney Walsh and the likes of Asafa Powell, Veronica Campbell and their teammates. They all did it (accomplish their goals), and so will we. This is our opportunity to liberate ourselves. Ghandi did it in India. Martin Luther King Jr. did it in America. WEBMASTER'S REPLY OR COMMENT ............................ If you separate the powers, will this not set up more political infighting? Too many checks and balances lead to low progress on issues... have you seen how slow and in-effective the US government was in response to the hurricanes? Too many kings! As a matter of record Mr. Campbell, I no longer believe in the separation of Legislative and Executive powers. On the matter of directly elected political leaders... the leader of a country or council must not only enjoy the confidence of the people, but also of the people’s leaders; the elected representatives! It is the elected representatives who have to work closely with the leader and they know his/her strengths and weaknesses. Direct elections remove the power from representatives to influence policy and direction. On the other hand, the leader s insulated from power struggles. The first US president was wise to this danger of becoming an elected " king" and ensured that he consulted with others and limited himself. However, the US system has failed in most other countries! Let's think this thing through! Often it is PERSONNEL we wish to change and not SYSTEMS! Kennedy Reid. [--------------------THE END OF ENTRIES-------------------] Legal Notices - Please read 1.
