Portmore Week is here! ############################################################# Hello everyone! "Portmore Week" starts NEXT WEEK. Please be a part of the many events. It starts with a church service at Emanuel Apostolic Church on Sunday. I need someone to send me a list of the other events for the week so I can share it with the Newsletter! What a way dem a kill poor Portia because she wants pastors on the various boards! What people don't understand is that most Boards are voluntary work and are poorly attended by the appointees. Many government institutions suffer because there is no good oversight from a board. If we had better boards in Jamaica many of abuses in institutions would be avoided! Let the Pastors get involved in public life as they used to be 100 years ago! What really takes place is that there is great competition for the Boards that compensate the members in some way. Those boards are packed because they have real power and influence! On these boards sit the intelligencia, the partisans and the prominent business people of Jamaica (as well as the odd boy-toy and girl-friday!). I wonder if these people want pastoral oversight? Enjoy the rest of this newsletter.... and do not hesitate to share your point of view with us! More later... News from the Net - Hospital, Small Business Center ############################################################# Ministry of Local Government & Environment Construction of a Hospital in Portmore to Begin this Year KINGSTON(JIS) Wednesday, April 19, 2006 PRINT THIS SEND TO A FRIEND Ground is to be broken this year for the construction of a hospital in Portmore. This was disclosed to JIS News over the weekend by Mayor of Portmore, George Lee. He pointed out that an agreement was being worked out for the building of a 200-bed hospital for the Municipality, at a cost of US$40 million. "We have had extensive discussions with a company from the Cayman Islands and have developed a Memorandum of Understanding, and by the end of April, the company should complete all the requisite surveys and studies which would be handed over to the Municipality," he said. The idea for a hospital has been discussed at several community meetings, Mr. Lee said, and the residents have responded positively. However, the Mayor stressed that before the conclusion of an agreement, several other public hearings would be held to gain the widest possible public view on the matter. "The Caymanian company has been carrying out surveys with citizens to determine the type of hospital required and the services to be offered and a report is expected by the end of April which would guide further actions," Mr. Lee said. He pointed out that about 70 per cent of persons surveyed were in favour of the hospital, with some residents expressing concern about the cost of the health services to be provided. "As a minority joint venture partner in the project, the Municipality will have some say in the matter of prices, so persons should not have to worry that they will be left to the mercy of the majority shareholder to charge freely. The hospital, although a private one, will have several public features," the Mayor said. In the meantime, Mr. Lee said the Ministry of Health was being kept abreast of all developments. http://www.jis.gov.jm/ -------------------------------------------------------------- Small Business Complex to be Developed in Portmore KINGSTON(JIS) Wednesday, April 19, 2006 The Portmore Municipal Council is developing land for the creation of a complex that will house several small businesses. The property is located behind the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) depot in Greater Portmore and was donated by the Ministry of Housing, Water, Transport and Works. Mayor of Portmore, George Lee, told JIS News that in addition to creating a facility for small entrepreneurs to ply their trade, room would be provided for a large open-air food market. "The land that we're building on will certainly house small businesses but space is being allocated for the building of a market, and we are in the process of seeking funding to build that market," he informed. He noted that, "just last week, we sat down and looked at the space we had and asked our team to develop the specks for it including for parking and other considerations." Meanwhile, the Mayor told JIS News that the Municipal Council would be embarking on a drive to remove vendors from restricted areas. The idea, he said, was to organise vending in the municipality, through the creation of approved vending areas. He explained that, "we'll call in all the vendors and serve notices on them and we will say to them, that we are going to look at a piece of land and we want to bring you onto it and provide certain services. We intend to clean up certain communities but before we do that, we offer somewhere that they can ply their vending legally and so that's where we are". "After that has been established, no allowance will be made otherwise and persons who flout the law, will face the full weight of it," the Mayor added. http://www.jis.gov.jm/ ----------------------------------------------------------------- The Funeral Home has opened in the Portmore Town Center and is doing good reasonable business. Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2006 18:59:52 -0400 (EDT) To: webmaster@portmore.org Subject: Message from Front page How many schools are there in Greater Portmore? How did Greater Portmore get its name? Julane Powell ...................WEBMASTER'S ANSWER.......... Greater Portmore was conceived by WIHCON and is ADJACENT to the original Portmore development which was starting in 1967. Just as the Passage Fort scheme is BESIDE the original Passage Fort, Gregory Park Scheme is BESIDE the original Gregory Park Pen, and Braeton Phase I, II, and II are BESIDE Old Braeton, so too is Greater Portmore just west of Portmore. For a more definitive answer I will be interviewing Mr. Matalon for my Book on the History of Portmore... and this will be one of the questions asked :how exactly and who gave Greater Portmore it's name. Interestingly, Greater Portmore was the last great project of Mr. Manley, just Mr. Seaga was key to the start of Portmore - Kennedy Reid .............................................. Greater Portmore was on the drawing books from the late 1980s and was announced in 1989, but it took time for financing to be in pace for a 5 Billion dollar project of it's magnitude. The National Land Agency has VERY GOOD maps. They are near North Street. They allowed me to search through some very old and dusty draws and I found an aerial photograph of Portmore from 1943! They have very current maps and maps going back to 1930s (although they think it is from the 1890s!) - Kennedy Reid .................................................. Tanisha I am real sorry to hear that you are not working! I pray you get a job soon. Do you have any qualifications of skills that others may want to use? If not, then you must consider getting some. See our nurses are getting jobs abroad! (good for them!) The Mayor may be able to point you in the direction of a Job but the REAL truth is that POLITICIANS can not provide real jobs ... it is businesses and institutions that do. The question we must ask ourselves is... are we creating an environment for job creation? The Municipality is providing space for a Market and 70 lots for small businesses. Also there are going to be designated vending areas and a new modern mall beside the 100 man station. We can only hope that businesses will prosper and provide jobs for us all! - Kennedy Reid ...........................................................
