There have not been many e-mails recently so do allow me to entertain you below and to invite you to "Family Day". HIGHWAY2000's September Test. On the first school day in September the local media were posted at key points waiting for trouble between Portmore residents and the toll operators. The Police were everywhere and obviously on alert. Prior to this, the authorities issued a statement warning some Portmore residents not to cause trouble and suggesting that they use the alternate route! (like wi have a choice!). Nothing happened. Anyway, insults aside... The highway has delivered some clear benefits and we need to be grateful! Coming from Greater Portmore I save quarter tank of gas per week and 30-45 minutes off my travel time to work. That is GREAT savings! Of course, like so many others I boycott the highway in the evenings. If I paid the toll in both directions my savings would be wiped out! I hope too many of us are not doing this or else the toll operators will soon be raising the toll to get full profit from the one-way morning traffic. Again, we would have the do-do end...(pardon the expression) In the mornings if you arrive on the highway after 7:00 a.m. the traffic lines will be very long. However, unlike a few months ago when we sat for hours in stagnant traffic, the lines move on quickly so the highway is working! Below are a few ideas for improvement... ONE - Place ABMs near the toll booths to assist persons who forget to carry money or who have no change. TWO - Persons need to be prevented from using the soft shoulders as a fourth lane as this will quickly degrade the road. Increased maintenance expenses equals increased tolls. THREE - Hagley Park road needs to be a one-way up to Three Miles, OR they need to allow traffic to turn right - on to side roads. In my mind, while I strongly disagree with how the highway was developed, I have to say it has passed the September traffic test. What do you think? Now to the invitation... For those of you who are interested, the Oasis Christian Community will be holding its monthly "Family Day" on the Fourth Saturday of this month... that is this Saturday. Starting time is 10:00 a.m. at Medallion Hall Hotel. All are welcome. The study verse will be Matthew 11 and the Featured DVD will Kirk Franklin's award winning songs. A movie on "the Bible" will be shown. The Bible has an interesting History. On the first Saturday of October there is an all day prayer meeting at the same venue. It is called , or course, "Prayer Day". Again, all are invited. Silton Townsend (Mass Gussy) is the Leader and there are people of all denominations present. Last week Saturday we had "Ministry Day". The family visited a pastor in the hospital. He has terminal Cancer and now needs a miracle if he is to recover. Please help us pray! Is there anything too big for God? The pastor is in good spirits and the medicines have reduced the pain. He says that he waiting on God for a specific word on his case...Whether it is death, healing, or grace to endure. He says he has Discovered \ that there is no 'death' in God. One passes into “more life!” when one dies. He is surprised that there has been “real joy” for him even in this situation and that God gives grace for every situation! Later that day the kids gave out tracks! The day was well spent. See you Saturday if you are so moved! http://www.occvision.org On to Jamaican Elections.... I just got a call about the PNP Conference this weekend. No one knows WHEN the national elections will be called but an unreliable "birdy" has it that Portia will call it in October! Polls put the PNP ahead and predict that the elections will be close in many constituencies. The stakes are high for both Mrs. Miller and Mr. Golding. I don't think either of them will survive a loss! Both need affirmation. Here is my SIMPLE view... this election will be about the logic of Bruce and the emotions of Portia. Both will use media ads to win in their weak areas. In vain will Bruce call for debates and in vain will Portia wait for Bruce to launch personal attacks... bating each other to enter each other's stronghold. In balance, Portia has a slight advantage and should win... but elections are never over until the votes are counted. It should be an interesting Elections, I hope it is over as quickly as a flash flood. What do you think? What must Portia or Bruce do to win in Jamaica? More later... To: webmaster@portmore.org Hello There! I'm planning on visiting Jamaica for over two weeks starting later this month. I was given as a reference Jewels International Resort, Lot 3, Port Henderson Rd., as a place to stay. However, on my Shell road map, acquired during a prior visit to Jamaica, I can't seem to find this road. Is it a newly built road? What are some major cross streets near it? Or how would one get there from off from the Portmore-Kingston Causeway to reaching it? I do plan to get a rental car while I'm in Jamaica this time. Eric Snow 25301 5 Mile Rd., #232 Redford, Michigan, 48239 USA snoweric66@sbcglobal.net ======================== WEBMASTER'S ANSWER ======================== Eric, Any taxi driver knows where Jewels hotel is in Portmore! You could also consider Casa Blanca Hotel. Both are by the sea on the western shores of Kingston Harbour (in Portmore). However, if you want to swim you will have to travel south to Hellshire beach. you may call me when you come... 320-7343... if you need more help.
