(Fort Augusta is within the official borders of the Municipality.) It was build by hundreds of slaves and many died in the process. It was the scene for the most expensive movie in the world in 1915. This movie was the first major film with a nude scene and the star became a sex symbol. The Fort saw a significant revolt in 1808 that caused great political uproar in Jamaica. From the fort soldiers invaded America in 1815 and put down Sam Sharpe Revolt. Fort Augusta is now scheduled to be destroyed (with only small sections to be preserved.) I think this would be a tragic loss to Jamaica! I wonder if people are aware of the great history and potential of the place... I have written an essay (with nuff pictures) about the history of Fort Augusta in the hope that people will join the call for the preservation of the Fort as is. I hope that more powerful advocates will take up the issue Please read it at www.portmore.org/history/fort-augusta.html Please pass this article on to others! Now just a note... If you were planning to attend "Family Day" this month, we had to put it off until next month... so see you in November! Can you shed any light on how to proceed. I can also be reached at 322-7988 Marcia Dawes-Lamey rallyprincess@gmail.com ================== Webmaster's Reply ================== Can anyone help Marcia? Hello Municipal Employees ( who read this newsletter...) People are saying that they can NOT get through to your office. Can something be done soon please! ==================================================== Want a Portmore Hotel ==================================================== From: Playaz716@aol.com Date: Sat, 14 Oct 2006 19:53:06 EDT Subject: hotels or inn at Portmore To: webmaster@portmore.org Hi I have been to your community while in Jamaica on several occasions. I am interested in obtaining a hotel or inn in Portmore for December 21-29 2006. This inn is for two adults, requires hot and cold water, air conditioning, TV, phone(optional), clean, and in the Portmore area, (safe area). If you know of such a place please give me an e mail. Thanks ================== Webmaster's Reply ================== Yes, there are some nice places on the Port Henderson Strip with all the comforts of a modern small hotel. The Site has been updated with a hotel section... See it at www.portmore.org/hotel/index.html Over the next few months I hope to have this page updated with pictures of each hotel. D.N ================== Webmaster's Reply ================== Dear D.N. So sorry to hear of your problem. For our readers who do not know - the houses in most of Greater Portmore are accessed via pathways and not roadways. neighbours often dispute about the "other" uses to which persons attempt to put these pathways. Some want to park cars, others to grow gardens and others as a playing field. We need the Municipality to specifically address this matter in Greater Portmore... allowing accommodation where possible and not sticking to the letter of the law. Citizens MUST work together. D.N. you need to contact the Municipal Authority. You can walk in to visit them at the Portmore Pines Plaza. Our website also has their numbers listed on the front page. I think your Councillor is Leon Thomas. He has an office within the community at which you may lodge a complaint. Kennedy Reid ==================================================== Vote for One Third (and Asafa Powel) - KALI ==================================================== From: KALI [name changed on request] To: portmore_newsletter-owner@yahoogroups.com Subject: RE: Portmore E-newsletter : Date: Tue, 26 Sep 2006 14:56:53 +0000 Please use your newsletter to solicit votes for the group ONE THIRD. It is rather unfortunate that the final decision to be made is subject to the public vote. Hence this appeal. I recently learnt that the group is from Portmore. It would be good if we could all give them our support Thank you. KALI ================== Webmaster's Reply ================== Hi KALI Sorry for taking so long to answer as its too late now!! I was just too busy to send out the request immediately. Anyway, your desire came true as 'One Third' won the contest anyway. One of the singers is from Portmore... he works at the library and he is great with the kids there! I hope he gets a good career in singing. Now, here is another something we can all vote for... "Please go to the following website and vote for Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson as male and female athletes of the year. They are way behind in the polls. Though the traffic is heavy after 7:00am, I'm still able to reach work on time thus far- that is by 8:05am at the N.M.I.A. The latest I've left my house is 7:20am and I still have not been late to date.
