Do forgive. "Happy New Year, Merry Christmas and the rest!" THIS YEAR marks the start of the construction of the Causeway and the Dyke to contain the Rio Cobre floods. Without these two activities modern Portmore would not have been possible. NEXT YEAR will be the 40th anniversary of the first residents to step into a scheme house in Portmore. These were the people who occupied the first 19 houses in Independence City. They were the first of over 170 thousand who moved to Portmore over the next 40 years. They should be in their sixties and seventies. I think we need to celebrated these activities as ... "The 40th Anniversary of the start of Modern Portmore" I have already approached the Mayor about the idea and he thinks it is a good idea. Is there any of you who wants to be a part of this? Currently, the Municipality busy working on Cricket's World Cup but next year we can concentrate on the History of Portmore. Whether of not, I will be launching the book on the History of Portmore. Anyone who speaks to me will know that I am very excited about this. The history of our people is so fascinating. I will be forming a group to review the book. Do you want to be a part of that? On another matter... Every time there is a fire at the Riverton Landfill we all make a fuss and forget about it until the next episode. This has been going on for over 20 years now. Last year's event was one of the worst on record and a national disgrace! The whole city of Kingston as far as Papine was covered in smoke for days. Indeed, as my family enjoyed the pool at the Hilton Hotel the smoke passed through and I was forced to retreat indoors. It is time that something be done that is permanent. We need to keep the pressure up on the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) and the Politicians to do something permanent. Not only is the air being polluted, but the adjacent seas and subsoil. must be gone also. Is anyone shocked that Jamaica is having such a high cancer rate... One other negative matter... Can you believe that they are had the gall to apply for an increase in the toll! Most mornings you have to get to the toll gate BEFORE 6:50 if you want a free flow to Kingston. Otherwise you will be in traffic as soon as you get out of the booth! The real solution o traffic problems is to improve public transportation and bring work places closer to our homes in Portmore. I just got a Court order to attend as a "common juror" in Spanish Town. What happen to a house and other entities in Portmore o we can all wok near our homes. We have two top primary and one prep in Portmore, but there is no top high school for our kids. Parents have even resorted to lying about where they live to assure their child a place in a "good" high school. We have to work to move top churches, schools, agencies, and businesses to Portmore. Finally, See we have a new advertiser.... Please go to his site and look at "what's what" in Jamaica. Kennedy Reid 2) ======================================================== From: "Karen Henry" Subject: Portmore photos Date: Tue, 19 Dec 2006 15:57:58 -0500 Dear Kennedy I'm glad to see that somebody else was displeased with the photographs of Portmore [selected by the Gleaner]. I saw them and wondered if I was being sensitive. I had in fact planned to submit some of my own, as I love photography, but unfortunately was out of town that weekend. They really did not portray our Sunshine City in a very complementary light.
