This access point, has attracted a millions of dollars of road improvement works, the exact total expenditure is not yet ascertained, but the engineering feat and quality of work suggests that the investment is a sizeable one. There is now good quality, asphalted surface, re-enforced concrete side drains, completed in a timely and incidence free manner. Not so long ago, this roadway was in a deplorable condition which affected its economic potential and was characterised by central governmental authority neglect, heavy vehicle traffic, numerous crater looking potholes, storm water flooding and citizens/road users outcry. The Portmore Municipal Council through constant lobbying attempts influenced the government and responsible agency to identify funds for this important access point. In addition, stringent enforcement and monitoring by the councils enforcement team help to control the spiralling rate of development activity. Port Henderson has a colourful history and this general area was named after its former owner John Henderson, a Colonel in the 18 century colonial militia. The area acted as a port to the capital of the parish, Spanish Town and had a reputation as a fashionable spa and health resort. In more recent times, the area predominant land-use is characterised by a predominance of guest houses, entertainment centres and beach view restaurants and eatery. The Back Road – (an affectionate name for the Port Henderson Strip) has for over twenty years, developed a reputation, as a place for Jamaican men to be discrete in their after working hours leisure activity. The Council and the citizens of Portmore have recognised and it is now proven, that the road improvement project has created positive impact of the areas investment potential. Land owners have now shown a strong desire to re-invest in the land holdings. This is taking the form of property boundary improvements, landscaping and the lodging of development plans. With this type of property improvement, land values are showing positive signs and are appreciating. It can be concluded that constant lobbying and timely road improvement will create positive impacts. Port Henderson can now realise its full potential and can be viewed as Portmore’s economic belt and the ‘HIP STRIP’. Sincerly Cllr Colin Fagan Deputy Mayor – Portmore Municipal Council Candidate South East St. Catherine Tel 7736931 2) ======================================================== http://www.radiojamaica.com/news/story.php?category=2&story=32061 Portmore-based lobby groups renewed their pressure on the Government to reduce the toll on the Portmore Leg of Highway 2000. The groups are trying to get Portmore residents to sign a petition which will be sent to Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller. The All Hellshire Leadership Council, Portmore Joint Citizens’ Association and the Greater Portmore Joint Citizens’ Association have set up booths in Portmore for residents to sign the petition. The booths based at the Portmore Mall, Greater Portmore Shopping Centre and Portmore Pines Shopping Centre will be closed at 4 Saturday afternoon. The three groups have scheduled a meeting next Saturday at the Lions Civic Centre in Portmore, starting at 7 in the evening. The petition to the Prime Minister, will among other things, request improvements to Marcus Garvey Drive, where the three-lane toll road ends into a bottleneck. In addition, Portmore residents want the Prime Minister to reduce the toll rate which ranges from $60 for class one vehicles to $200 for class three vehicles. http://www.radiojamaica.com/news/story.php?category=2&story=32040 Trans Jamaica Highway Limited, the operators of Highway 2000 is again expressing concerns regarding the delays being experienced by users of the Portmore leg of the highway. The entity is reiterating that the delays result from the inability of Marcus Garvey Drive to accommodate the flow of traffic from Portmore. Against this background, Trans Jamaica Highway is again calling on the relevant state agencies and utility companies to move speedily to relocate distribution lines and other infrastructure in order to facilitate work on sections of Marcus Garvey Drive. The work, when completed should result in an improved flow of traffic from Portmore to Kingston. However, the highway operators are advising that the work will not solve the problems being experienced by users of the Portmore leg of the highway. The contract for the widening of the road from the intersection of the Portmore toll road/Marcus Garvey Drive intersection to Portia Simpson Miller Square came into effect this week. Transport and Works Minister Robert Pickersgill has on several occasions announced timetables for the improvement work. However, the Minister's pronouncements have never resulted in improvements for motorists travelling from Portmore.
