I' planning a trip to Jamaica On March 25th- April 10th Hi I've heard great things of your resort. I' planning a trip to Jamaica On March 25th- April 10th I'm wondering if you could quote me a price in $Canadian dollars. I would be looking at a standard room with two beds nothing too fancy just as long as it quite comfortable and of course clean. If you can get back to me ASAP I would gladly appreciate it. Thanx. I understand that based on my article on Fort Augusta and thanks to the efforts of Mr. Crawford of the Institute of Jamaica the Prime Minister is about to order that Fort Augusta not be destroyed! Thanks Prime Minister Simpson-Miller! We are now awaiting the formal letter, and I hope the Port Authority is hearing! What do you all think? Kennedy 5) ======================================================== I have approached Mayor Lee on the idea of marking the 40th Anniversary of modern Portmore! He felt it was a good idea and that a committee could be formed to look at the matter. Here was my presentation to the Advisory Council on the matter.... Some time between April and June 1968 the first residents of Independence City stepped into their new homes. They would not have known it at the time, but they were the first of over 150,000 persons who would make this move in the next forty years. In the process this once remote part of south east St. Catherine which was once the domain of rural villages and farms would become the Municipality of Portmore. While modern Portmore was conceived in the early 1960s and announced by 1964, the first schemes were not occupied until between 1968 - 1970. The first 19 houses in Independence City opened in 1968. The second scheme was Edgewater Villas and that was started by 1970/1. 1968 is an important year because on January 30 the lower House of Parliament gave its final approval for the the first scheme. The Senate gave their approval on February 2, 1968 in a resolution moved by Senator the Hon. Sir Neville Ashenheim. The Senator outlined to the nation that the scheme was designed to relieve housing congestion in the city and to decentralise the traffic congestion in the approaches to the city. The PNP Opposition saw the scheme as commendable. Sir Ashenheim assured the Senate that the new causeway to Portmore would serve the scheme. The Causeway was to be completed by December 1968 (it was started in 1967). I shall be launching a book on the history of Portmore in 2008 called “Portmore – from Marsh to Municipality” and I shall be officially writing to Major Lee and the Municipal Counil soliciting their support for this anniversary. A Municipal Committee could be formed to look into how we could celebrate the birth of Portmore. There are many ideas that the committee could work on. The 40th Anniversary Committee could: 1 Strike 40th Anniversary keys to the city to be presented to the pioneers and Builders of modern Portmore. Moses Mataon, Joseph Matalon, Edward Seaga, Michael Manley, Ralph Hotckins, Father Gore, etc. 2 Ensure that Portmore Week 2008 has a focus on Community History. 3 Establish an exhibition of pictures and articles solicited from the pioneering institutions. WIHCON, NHT, NHDC, CDC, USAID, Governement Ministries. 4 Hold public lectures by historic figures though the years. 5. Facilitate an outdoor/media pubic sessions of the Municipal Council .
