I have already advised you by e-mail that Mr. Kennedy Reid, author and prominent community leader, will be putting on a multimedia presentation titled "The History of Portmore" at our next meeting. Additionally, the United States Peace Corps in Jamaica would also like to update their Host Families in Cumberland on new developments in respect of volunteer training and accommodation. As you will have realised by now, it will be impossible to accommodate all these activities if we start at our regular 8:00 p.m. starting time. Consequently, we are instituting the following changes: # The Peace Corps Group will meet at 7:00 for ½ an hour, that is, from 7:00 to 7:30 p.m. (7:00 – 7:30 p.m.) # Our regular meeting will start at 7:30 and finish at 8:30 (1 hour) (7:30 – 8:30 p.m.) # Mr. Reid will commence his presentation at 8:30. The presentation runs for about 1 hour. (8:30 – 9:30 p.m.) Please be on time so that we can accommodate all the different stakeholders. Please invite your friends and neighbours to what is expected to be a very interesting presentation on Portmore. It got its name from the adjacent community now called "old" Passage Fort. This follows a trend to naming schemes after the adjacent rural village that once occupied the area... thus you have the Braeton Schemes beside Braeton, and Gregory Park Scheme beside Gregory Park and Passage Fort beside old Passage Fort. If you talking about Old Passage Fort, then there is tons I could tell you, but you would have to wait for the book as I have not condensed the information yet... What you should know already is that this is where the English first occupied Jamaica and marched on Spanish Town. It was the villagers of Passage Fort who were first considered for settlement on the Portmore Property as the village was always being flooded by the Rio Cobre. I hope others reading this e-newsletter can help better. Good Day All: I have been assisting the NYS with recruiting youths for their program. I have not been getting the level of response I hoped for as many of you have indicated that there are youths in your area whom you would love to see engaged in a meaningful way but to date only Monza has submitted a few. NYS have been aggressively advertising as they have increased the number of participants they can accommodate. The application deadline for the summer program is this Friday, May 4. All I need are names and contact numbers of seriously interested youths who are at the 10th grade and higher level. The stipend will be $3000.00 per week for secondary and $3500 for tertiary. We need to encourage the youths to be actively engaged - get them out of the constant idle state that many of them are in - the devil and idle hands - Let US give them even an opportunity to work, not all will be employed but even the interview process is an opportunity to learn for their future development and the ones who do go through are building their confidence to work and their resume's for colleges or jobs Looking forward to getting a list from you. Best Regards. Please be advised that the deadline for persons who are still interested has been extended to next Thursday, May 10. Persons should submit a cover letter and resume. For Communities with atleast 10 applications - I would be willing to collect them for submission. Regards. We would however like to know more: a) Who is the CayJam company - who owns it? What are their connections to Jamaica/Portmore? b) Where exactly is the 100 acres of land that has been sold to the company? c) What are the plans for the hospital? What kind of hospital is envisaged? What services will it offer? What kind of fees will it charge? Who will work in it? Where would we get this kind of information? Thanks for the newsletter! I look forward to receiving it. Shirley Whylie =============KENNEDY'S REPLY======== Dear Ms. Whylie, I enjoy sending out these newsletters! Thank you for thanking me!! Now, about the hospital, I am sure the Municipality and Mr. Lee have more information on the matter. There was a public presentation, but I am afraid that just like the toll road issue, many people did not attend. I and others warned them that there needed to be MUCH more public education in order to ensure that we no not have another round of protest! This is going to be a private hospital and so its fees will be like those that are already in existence. They say that they want to use the local health cards, nurses, doctors, etc. I encouraged them to go into cosmetic surgery tourism as Jamaica could make a lot of money off those Americans seeking to look like movie stars! Please call the Municipal office on the matter. Nice to hear from you! Please keep in touch..
