It was the top website about Portmore for the last 4 years on all the search engines. It received over 10,000 visitors per year - students, visitors, etc. However, I had to bring it down. All this happened because I had technical difficulties moving the site to a new server that charged 1/2 less per month. As you know, the site does not make money so a 50% cut in cost was needed. I got expert advice from around te world, but there was no go! So I just made a clean cut. However, do not despair! I have moved most of the site to a NEW address... Therefore I am pleased to announce the birth of PORTMORE.INFO http://www.portmore.info You will love this new site... I have made all the improvements I have always wanted to make to the old site! Over time the site will grow and be better than the first. It was quite a task moving hundreds of pictures, copying hours of data, and modifying tons of web pages! Remember, the new site is http://www.portmore.info Tell everyone to have a look around! Unneighbourly behaviour has apparently become the norm in Portmore, not only by those operating businesses, but by those who think it is their right to disturb others 24/7. Some persons have recently moved onto my street from Newland, and the quality of life on the avenue has changed for the worse. They do hairdressing, they play footbal in the street, they play loud music and conduct conversations at the top of their voices at all hours of the night. They listen to no-one and in fact have been verbally abusive to some of us who have asked them to curtail theiractivities or turn down the volume (TV/radio/voice). I have reached the end of my tether with them and am seriously considering calling in the police. If anybody has a solution, I would love to hear it. The recommendation came from Junior Minister in the Local Government Ministry, Harry Douglas. Mr. Douglas suggested that Portmore be split from St. Catherine. He said that given the fact that Portmore is a municipality operating unto itself, a split would be a good move. He asserted that this split would mean that Portmore would have its own mayor and Parish Council while St. Catherine would have a separate person acting as mayor and also its own council. However some committee members and experts took issue with this as the question was raised that other parishes would want such a change. Another issue with this suggestion was raised by Victor Cummings as to how the St. Catherine mayor would be elected. He questioned if the entire parish would vote for a St. Catherine mayor or would Portmore be excluded. In the end the issue proved too intricate to deal with in one sitting so it was agreed that it had to be revisited. Kennedy's Contribution=================== When Municipality (or city status) was first being discussed at the Task Force, we from Portmore did suggest that Portmore be made a Parish. This would have solved all the technical problems that faced us all ...after all.. Portmore was larger than most Parishes. However, the idea was so repulsive to others that it was immediately dismissed and scuffed at. We dared not raise the matter again for fear of causing unwanted friction and not being taken seriously. History may prove that The Municipal Legislation may not have been needed. Who knows... 5) ############################# Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2007 18:41:44 -0700 (PDT) From: "Natalie Bennett" Subject: portmore.org To: kennedyreid@yahoo.com, webmaster@portmore.org Good Evening, I am student of UTECH and I am currently doing a paper on environmental issues in portmore. I have used the portmore.org website in the past in many of my projects which proved very useful. However over the last couple of weks I have not been able to access the site. Could you please advise of the new site or how I can access the information. tis info is urgently needed. i look forward to your speedy and favourable response Natalie Kennedy's Response =================== Well Natalie, I am sorry you are having such a hard time. As you can see, for technical and cost reasons the site has moved to www.portmore.info The new site has most of the information that was on the last site. However, items that were not visited much have not been brought forward. If you do not see what you are looking for just ask and I will consider placing the information back online. Over time, the new site will be better than the old site. The new site will be officially launched on August 1, 2007. Best Regards! Kennedy Reid 6) ############################# Does anyone notice how the toll people are putting out the word that they are not getting the traffic they wanted? I suppose this is to get the public used to the idea that they will be increasing the toll soon. They have not been publishing the traffic figures, but the responsible minister had said that the use on the toll road was beyond expectations.. in fact it was double what was projected. I suppose he wanted to prove that people loved the toll road. To tell the truth. the toll road has been a blessing. It has relieved the horrible traffic into Kingston we used to experience... however, the deal negotiated to get this toll road has put Portmorians at a clear disadvantage as there is no acceptable alternative to the tolled road. We have no choice but to pay the toll...at $60 or $200 dollars... we have no true choice. On the matter of the "top" school to be built in Portmore. We need to insist that the Ministry of Education work with the Mayor and Councillors to ensure that the school meets the needs of the residents. The class rooms must NOT be made of Matalon's Prefabricated walls. They are too hot. There must be well equipped labs, workshops, etc. Finally, parents MUST be given a choice to select the school for their children and not be tricked into it. Finally, on the matter of elections... It is good that Mama Portia has finally called the elections. We all want to get this thing over. Polls indicate that the PNP may be looking at a fifth term in office. Since the 1970s Portmore has been a PNP supporting community; only voting JLP when the rest of Jamaica did so in a big way. Since the nation is almost evenly divided, it is going to be very difficult for JLP candidates to win in Portmore... but I am no expert. What do you all think? What do you think of Mr. Jackson (PNP) or Dr. Williamson (JLP)? What about Dr. Williams (JLP) or Mr. Fagan (PNP)? Write and share ideas. Let's pray for a peaceful and happy elections... and may the better choices win! Interestingly, my research INDICATES that the first elected official from St. Catherine (and by extension Portmore) was a former pirate! He became the first speaker of the Assembly!
