Subject: HIV/AIDS

Dear Kennedy Reid,
I want to laud you for bringing up the issue of HIV infection and AIDS in your newsletter. An once of prevention is worth a pound of treatment (of course there is no cure yet). I am a physician living in California and I began recieving your newsletter only because my last name is Portmore and was interested in connections to my family name. I am an HIV/AIDS and Infectious Diseases expert and have followed the spread of the AIDS virus in so many countries when the leadership denied the problem, leading to the death of many people and virtual destruction of society. I want to encourage your community to address this issue and begin or continue and aggressive campaign to prevent the spread of the HIV infection. I would offer to answer any questions you have about AIDS. If your town officials do not address this problem, you in essence will be responsible for all the suffering that will follow. Let me know if I can be of any help.

First of all i would like to say that you guys are doing a good job with this website. This is my first time on this site and i'm impressed. I'm originally from bridgeport but i'm in Washington now. I lived in bridgeport for 16yrs before leaving for the states in 96. I would really like to see a site setup for bridgeport. The name Kennedy Reid sound familiar but i'm not quite sure if you have any ties to the church of Reconciliation, that's the church i use to go to.
Any ways you guys keep up the oustanding job and keep me up to date with what is going on around Portmore, especially bridgeport. I'm currently in the US Army right now but im planning to visit home soon.

CHERTON DACOSTA - NHT

1998
By now youy might be aware that I am an ardent fan of your community's Web Page. I have told almost everybody about it. Unfortunately the NHT does not have a Web Page to look at it. I know for certain that the Librarian, Delores Sicard has an E-Mail address at dsicard@cwjamaica.com. (I think)
Ask her or the Public Education Director Hortense Rose to prepare some information on the NHT for inclusion on your page. I checked and found that the Trust was not included which is a pity since that organisation has done so much for Portmore and Greater Portmore in particular. You may want to discuss it with Mrs. Simpson of our Community Services Department.
I also noticed that u carried information on CVM TV and not the SSSTV. By the way, u may be getting a visit from the Gleaner as I was boasting about your web page to them and the editor said he thought it was an interesting idea.
Hey please keep me updated on the launch of this project as I would like to be there. I am currently on leave for three weeks so please feel free to talk to me.
God Bless.

Subject: NHT President's Conference 1999

Hi Kennedy Reid
This is just a follow-up to the conversation we had about our President's Conference to be held on Saturday October 23, 1999 in the foyer of our corporate offices at the National Housing Trust, 4 Park Boulevard, Kingston. As you may recall this conference is a meeting held once per year of all our community leaders islandwide. Respective groups will be asked to give a report of their area.
For example, you will be asked to report on the programme and activities of the Greater Portmore Joint Council; Someone from the other areas of Portmore will report on that area and so on. The guest speaker will be Monsignor Father Richard Albert of the Stela Maris Foundation in Kingston. It is important that all out presidents make an effort to attend. Where a president cannot make it we expect that a representative will be able to attend from the respective citizens association.
For u I would appreciate if u make a presentation on your library project to the participants.
Kindly inform your presidents who may not have heard of this conference. Information on the activities for the day can be had from the following:
Mrs. Josephine Simpson (Manager), Darcy Maxwell, Lenworth Black and Cherton DaCosta. Telephone 9296500-9 or 9681772.
All the best

Dear Sir/Madam,
Given the unprecedented increase in the rate of crime and violence in our country, it is no surprise that personal security has become one of the major concerns of all Jamaicans. Unfortunately, owing to the down-turn in the economy, many have found that the existing providers of home security systems just do not fit the average budget.
Taking into consideration the financial constraints of so many individuals, we have set ourselves a target to provide the comfort of security to homes without the great strain of 'out-of-reach' expenses. Taking advantage of technology, coupled with creative thought, we are geared to supply Jamaica with state-of-the-art wireless security systems and devices that directly eliminate the often-lengthy installation time and high fees. As an added service to the customer, and for a specified time, we are offering to do installations of these systems free of charge!
We have access to a wide variety of security systems, home automation equipment and devices for a variety of purposes, all with unique features, with prices ranging from as low as three thousand dollars installed! Naturally, prices increase based on types of systems required. An informative flyer has been attached to this letter giving a sample of our products.
Please feel free to call or e-mail and set up an appointment to learn more.

Yours truly,

Hello Mr. web master. I am extremely pleased to see that portmore has the technology to create such an informative website of the city. What I am concerned about is how is it that the capital of Jamaica do not have one. I would like to show all my foreign friends and let the world know about true Jamaica - Kingston and not just the tourist attractions. You can advertise Kingston by showing the world how we enjoy Kingston by the activities and photos of what it has to offer. Is there a website for Kingston or any of the relative cities? If so can you e-mail me the current website addresses so I can take a look.
Thank You

I am pleased to know that the community of Portmore is harnessing the use of computer technology. I have been trying to get a number of persons to understand its importance.
I was quite surprised to know that there is an internet provider in St. Catherine as I have been searching for one, over a period of nine months without success. Therefore, I had no alternative but to use one of those in Kingston.
However, I will shortly make the switch to the St. Catherine provider.
At the institution where I am working in Above Rocks St. Catherine we have the most outstanding lab of all secondary schools in Jamaica. However, internet service is provided by CWJ at a minimal cost.
I will link the homepage of the ISP and Greaterportmore.org to my webpage. Its URL is :www. angelfire.com/on/dyoll/index.html.
I am also a partial resident of Greater Portmore as my mother and I received one of the first houses allocated.
Feel free to visit anytime and if you so desire, sign my guest book

Mr. Kennedy Reid
Chairman
The Greater Portmore Joint Council
P.O. Box 37
Greater Portmore P.O.

Dear Mr. Reid,
First let me congratulate you on setting up a website where the public and community members can visit to get precious information on the community and also to voice their views. I am a resident of East Chedwin, it was surprising to me to learn that the persons who were running for Local Government in Southern St. Catherine were unknown to me likewise many others who I have spoken to, why wasn't there any meeting between the residents and candidates via the Citizens Associations, I think if this was done then there would have been more voter turn out. How can you vote for someone whom you have never seen nor heard of, in my situation I got a pamplet three days before the election introducing the P.N.P rep. to me, there was nothing from the J.L.P or Independent rep.
Now that the Parish Councilor has been chosen is there any possibility of the GPJC setting up a meeting with the citizens of the various communities (who are represented on the GPJC) and invite the Parish Councilor (Mr. Richard Bell) so we can all get to meet him and hear about his aims and objectives as it relates to our community or better yet have him speak on the community channel that is run by JACS cable in this way we can call in and participate.
I have heard Mrs. Barbara Gloudon speaking of a book that all Citizens Associations should have in thier possesion which outlines the role of the Parish Councillor, I think it's a good idea for the GPJC to have one, you could call the Ministry of Local Government for information on acquiring such a book.
During the heavy rainfall on Monday, residents of East/West Chedwin and West Sabina had to take things in their hands to prevent the main gully from overflowing it's banks and coming into our homes, all the debris that was taken from the gully are now left in a huge mountain at the intersection of Henderson Blvd and SE 4th Street. I think this is a job for our Parish Councilor Mr. Bell, this needs to be dealt with as soon as possible as it poses as a threat to motorist and persons who use the road (it's located at the corner of the road), there is also some debris on the sidewalk opposite the open lot where the telephone box is.
With regards to the Noise Abatement Act I think the GPJC, The Sound System Association of Jamaica (they also have a website) and the Police needs to work much closer, try to get a copy of the Noise Abatement Act via the Ministry of National Security or the Sound System Association. The three parties need to meet and discuss the problems that are being faced by the various communities. MORE ANON.

I would like to take the opportunity to praise the Greater Portmore Joint Council for presenting such an informative and cohesive website.
Since my departure from Jamaica in May 1998, I have kept in touch with developments in Jamaica through various media, however, most of what I got relates to unacceptable civilised behaviour by a few in the Jamaican society and redundancies in the private sector. Your website, however, offers a contrasting perspective with excellent and beautiful photograph of a community striving to different in every respect.
Keep up the good work guys.

Hi Kennedy,
Sorry to have taken so long to respond - I was away in California on a human rights mission of all things!
> Saw your article in the Gleaner... most interesting and well said.
> If you wish, these are the articles we would love to post on our community-based site.
> Why? Because they are of public interest and could spur though...
Don't have a problem with you posting it to your site. Since the Observer has a copyright in the article - would suggest that you acknowledge it when you are posting it.
> > On the issues you raised...
> > Mightbe we need to distinguish between a Human Rights Lawyer and Human Rights Activist bent on their own social objectives? ... most Jamaicanswant Justice, but it must be a Justice System with OUR values.
Well, it depends on what you mean by social objectives. Your comment seems to assume that there is a difference between the the values/social objectives of human rights lawyers/activists and Jamaicans generally. I am not sure that this is necessarily the case. I think people generally have a need for justice. Problem is how you define it. Jamaicans tend to see justice in retributive terms, while human rights lawyers/activists like myself see justice in restorative terms.
What, may I ask do you see as "OUR values"?

SANDRA BUCKLAND - After Hurricane Mitch

October 26, 1998
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN
I visited your website with high expectation of seeing some information which would have been pertinent to the communities of Portmore in the face of an impending (potential) disaster (such as a category five (5) hurricane, making land fall on our backdoor step). I found nothing. No list of shelters,
No telephone number for disseminating emergency information
No flooded roads alert (within the Portmore communities)
No list of businesses remaining open late to facilitate last minute purchase of emergency supplies
No list of emergency supplies to pack in the event of the necessity to evacuate one's home
No plans for immediately after the hurricane (should it have occurred)
Nothing of any real value in the face of what could have been. A web site is a tool of information, not a gallery of pretty pictures, or to give one interesting cocktail party conversation. Please do not fall into the all too prevalent attitude of "all form and very little substance" which is besetting our society in too many areas
You may respond to me if you like
Sincerely
Sandra Buckland

Dear Person.....
I have a question of great importance to me and my family. My name is Richard Bogle. My great grandfather, Richard A. Bogle, left Jamaica at age 12 and eventually settleld in the Northwest U.S. There are two family legends. One states that Richard A. Bogle was the son of Paul Bogle and the second that he was the son of an English general. The biographies of Paul Bogle I have read state nothing at all about his family so we have run into a brick wall. I do not assume you have the anwers to this riddle but hopefully you might have an e mail address of an historical resource who might be able to help. thank you for any help.
